The NFL head coaching carousel is in full swing after big names John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski have already been hired after just weeks of being free agents.
Searching for a job as an NFL head coach can be stressful, and the job itself is even more so, which is why this Hall of Famer and current Miami Dolphins consultant questions why anyone would want to endure what it takes to be an NFL head coach.
Troy Aikman questions the Decision To Coach
The Dolphins have recently hired NFL Hall of Famer and current ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman to help in the search for the team’s new head coach. As a result, Aikman has developed a strong opinion and has questioned why anyone would want to become a head coach.
“It’s a tough, tough job right now,” Aikman said on The Ticket in Dallas. “I’ve often said, I’m not sure why anyone would want to go into coaching, people still are.”
Aikman also said Rams head coach Sean McVay considered a transition into a television role after the team’s Super Bowl LVI victory.
It’s become popular for head coaches and players to take TV roles after retirement. Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin most recently decided to step away from coaching after 19 years with the team to seek a role in TV.
Former Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garret, and many others have all traded their headset for analyst roles with a major broadcast network.
On the other hand, there are coaches like Harbaugh and Stefanski who jump on the next head coaching opportunity they can find, which seems to baffle Aikman.

However, his viewpoint is understandable as Stefanski was let go, even after earning two Coach of the Year awards with the Browns. Even a slight hiccup during a coach’s tenure can send him out of the building.
Former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was considered safe after their owner said he would stay, but he was fired just days later.
Coaches are on such a short leash as of late, so it makes sense to ask if someone is willing to endure the pressures and obstacles head coaches face.
Good news for Aikman and the Dolphins, there are plenty of head coaching candidates who do not share Aikman’s sentiment towards coaching as they continue their search.
