‘Trading J.J. McCarthy Can’t Be Ruled Out’ — Vikings Insider Weighs In on QB’s Future Amid Growing Rumors

Vikings insider speaks up on J.J. McCarthy's future amid ongoing trade rumors due to Carson Wentz's push for QB2 spot in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Vikings have had a rocky time at quarterback since allowing Sam Darnold to walk in free agency to the Seattle Seahawks. The last two years have been rocky for J.J. McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus and then struggled with injuries and inconsistent play in his first year as a starter, and it put the Vikings in the QB market this past offseason.

Once he was cut from the Arizona Cardinals, the Vikings signed Kyler Murray and quickly named him the starter for the season. This was not shocking after McCarthy’s struggles seeped into camp, but it did put the young QB’s future up in the air.

Minnesota Vikings Insider Provides Insight into a Potential J.J. McCarthy Trade

The Vikings are not a team that should be missing the playoffs. With a superstar receiver like Justin Jefferson and a very good defense, Minnesota is a dangerous team in the NFC, but the QB play kept them from reaching those heights last season.

McCarthy finished the year ranked 34th in PFN’s QB Impact Metric, and although for basically his rookie year, that’s not catastrophic, the Vikings have no time to waste on his development. Hence, the Murray move in the offseason, which is only for one season.

Due to Murray’s short contract, the Vikings do not have a future at QB. Could that be Murray? Maybe, especially if he has a Darnold-type season. The Vikings will not make the mistake of letting the QB walk again, which would make McCarthy expendable. But even if Murray does disappoint at QB, the Vikings may not be able to put their trust in McCarthy for 2027 and beyond.

In the Vikings’ last preseason game of the season, McCarthy still had a chance to go out there and potentially perform against the Denver Broncos. Instead, he will miss the matchup due to an ankle injury. For his long-term health, risking the injury would have made little sense, but with trade rumors swirling, it was not a great sign.

Speaking of those rumors, Vikings insider Kevin Seifert discussed the possibility of McCarthy being traded and revealed that the team will handle it with patience:

“Trading J.J. McCarthy can’t be ruled out, but from everything I know, the situation isn’t urgent, dire or toxic enough for the Vikings to just give him away. We shall see how the next few days play out.”

Although a trade could be on the table, it makes sense that the team is not rushing to make a decision.

McCarthy, as I mentioned earlier, is still developing and has potential. That potential is not close to being reached, which is why the Vikings are going with Murray at QB, but giving up on him this early could jeopardize the team’s long-term success.

If a team calls Minnesota with a great deal, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the team accept, as Carson Wentz could serve well behind Murray, but they won’t just give McCarthy away.
