Deion Sanders is preparing for another season as the head coach of Colorado, but he also made time to visit the Cleveland Browns training camp as Shedeur Sanders enters his second season in the NFL. His presence at the camp, however, was somehow viewed as a distraction.
Deion Sanders Defends Himself From Criticism After Watching Shedeur’s Practice
Sanders coached his son for four years during his collegiate career, and they were never shy about the media. The young quarterback’s fall in the 2025 draft was the biggest story of the event, and when he finally played in Cleveland, all his throws were closely scrutinized.
Deion was a star in the league during his career, and his presence around the Browns is something noteworthy, with his son involved in a quarterback battle with Deshaun Watson. Still, the Colorado head coach, in a recent appearance at “The Scoop”, said he couldn’t understand the big deal around his presence in Cleveland:
“[35:35] People made a big deal of it, and I thought that was crazy, because if I go to the Broncos to see Coach Payton, which is my partner, we’re going to hug, we’re going to embrace. If I go to the Cowboys complex, how is that gonna be? Even a team that I didn’t play for, it’s going to be [that way] because I played the game at an extremely high level. Nothing to do with my kid.”
Browns head coach Todd Monken was one of the people that Sanders wanted to meet. Monken, who spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, spoke to the media about how excited he was to see Deion:
“That was Deion Sanders, are you kidding me? Forget that it is Shedeur’s dad. First of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shedeur. Great kid, obviously an elite football, hell, baseball player. And then as a coach, I mean, everything he’s achieved, that was awesome.”
Sanders was the third quarterback to start games for Cleveland in 2025. He threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions, winning three out of seven games as a starter. His performances were hardly impressive, and he was ranked as No. 37 in our PFSN QB Impact Metric last season with a 63.0 rating.

Shedeur Sanders was handed the starter job late in the 2025 season, but he’s now in a direct battle with Deshaun Watson as the veteran returned from multiple Achilles injuries. At this point, there’s no official confirmation on who’s going to lead the Browns in Week 1.
