What Is Terry Pegula’s Net Worth, and How Did He Make His Fortune?

The Bills were not the first professional sports team to be purchased by Terry. Back in 2011, the businessman purchased Buffalo’s NHL team, the Sabres, for $189 million.

Then, in 2014, Pegula outbid groups led by Donald Trump and Jon Bon Jovi to purchase the Bills for $1.4 billion. So, how did the Pegulas get the money to make such a massive purchase?

The 74-year-old began his career working for Getty Oil after graduating from Penn State University with a degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering. After working at Getty for a time, Pegula founded East Resources, a natural gas drilling company, with a $7,500 loan from family and friends.

Pegula grew the company and eventually sold parts of it to Royal Dutch Shell for approximately $4.7 billion. The businessman would then sell additional assets of the company for $1.75 billion in 2014, ahead of his purchase of the Bills.

Terrence Pegula‘s net worth is around $9.3 billion, placing him 137th on 2025’s Forbes 400 list. Pegula is currently the 13th richest NFL owner in terms of net worth.

Pegula is married and has five children, including professional tennis player Jessica Pegula. The owner resides in Boca Raton, Florida, during the offseason.

Pegula Making Big Changes to Bills for 2026 Season

Entering the 2025 season, nobody believes that Sean McDermott was on the hot seat as the head coach of the Bills. McDermott had been in charge since the 2017 season and led the Bills to the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons.

However, the Bills suffered another devastating playoff loss last weekend, prompting Pegula to make a change. The team is looking for a head coach who can help the team return to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1993 season.

On paper, the Bills should have no shortage of suitors. The team has Josh Allen at quarterback, who is one of the best in the league at his position. PFSN’s NFL QB Impact Metric gave Allen an elite 90.0 grade for his 2025 performance.
