‘Where’s the Security??’ – US Open Under Fire as a Man Approaches Mirra Andreeva Mid-Match in Worrying Incident

A man approached 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva during her US Open doubles match, prompting fans to ask questions over tournament security.

Tennis fans erupted in outrage after a man from the stands approached 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva from behind during a changeover at her US Open doubles quarterfinal match. The disturbing moment, captured on video and shared widely across social media, ignited fierce backlash from viewers who slammed both the fan’s inappropriate behavior and the glaring lack of security at one of tennis’s most prestigious tournaments.

What Did the Fan Say to Mirra Andreeva During the Changeover?

The clip showed Andreeva sitting courtside next to her doubles partner, Diana Shnaider, during their match against Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens when the man leaned in from the stands. He spoke briefly to the teenager, who acknowledged him before he walked away. Andreeva laughed it off with Shnaider afterward, but the moment raised serious concerns about player safety.

The chair umpire quickly checked in with the rising star, and Andreeva explained that the man had simply said “hi.” However, the optics of a grown man approaching a young female player mid-match drew heavy criticism, especially after other recent incidents at the US Open put fan behavior squarely in the spotlight.

This incident came just days after footage of a spectator attempting to unzip World No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s bag after his win over Alexander Bublik went viral, forcing security to intervene. The tournament also faced backlash when Piotr Szczerek, the Polish CEO of a paving company, was filmed snatching a hat from a child in the crowd after Kamil Majchrzak’s match against Karen Khachanov.

How Did Social Media Users Call Out the Tournament After the Incident?

Against this backdrop of mounting security concerns, the Andreeva incident added fuel to a growing debate about how well the US Open is protecting its players and fans. Once the video of the encounter surfaced on X, users didn’t hold back in their reactions.

“Dear Lord, she’s a child you creep. I hope @usopen does something about this. This man must be ejected from the tournament,” one person wrote.

Another user added, “Like this. Maybe instead of lets and tosses. Let’s discuss why fans are trying to open Sinner’s bag and why no security is stopping this wacko from getting Mirra’s attention during changeover.”

The criticism grew more pointed as fans highlighted the dangerous implications. One fan noted the security failures, writing, “Wtf where were the bodyguards? That’s forbidden during a match… And men approaching female players behind their back during changeover doesn’t exactly bring back good memories in our sport. That guy had all the time to do anything to Mirra. Step up @usopen.”

Others were more blunt, calling the act “so creepyyyy” and demanding answers: “Where is the security????” and “Jail.”

Meanwhile, on the court, Andreeva and Shnaider ultimately fell short in their quarterfinal clash, going down 4-6, 2-6. The teenager had already wrapped up her singles run with a third-round defeat to Taylor Townsend. In mixed doubles, she teamed up with fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev, but the pair bowed out in the quarterfinals against top seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper.
