The 2025 tennis season has concluded, with players currently recuperating after a long and arduous season and preparing for the next one. While there were some tremendous achievements on the court, there were some heartbreaking moments on the court as well. Let’s look at some of those incidents in 2025
Naomi Osaka’s ASB Classic Final Ends in Tearful Retirement
The 2025 season began on a bittersweet note for four-time Major champion Naomi Osaka. The Japanese started her season at the ASB Classic in Auckland and reached her first Tour-level final since 2022 with wins over the likes of Hailey Baptiste and Alycia Parks, and faced Clara Tauson in the final.
A title after almost four years seemed on the cards, as Osaka won the first set, but all her hopes came crashing down as she had to withdraw from the match in the second set due to an abdominal injury, handing the victory to her Danish opponent.
Holger Rune’s Devastating Injury
Holger Rune is one of the young stars on the ATP Tour whose progress fans were eagerly awaiting. The Dane, however, suffered a season-ending injury at the Stockholm Open, where he ruptured his Achilles tendon, leading to heartbreaking scenes of him in tears on the court. Before this event, Rune had three retirements in 2025, in Acapulco, Monte-Carlo, and Madrid.
Emma Raducanu Stalker Incident in Dubai
One of the most upsetting incidents from the 2025 tennis season was the Emma Raducanu stalking incident during the Dubai Tennis Championships. During the Brit’s match against Karolina Muchova, she spotted a stalker in the crowd, which caused her to report his presence to the umpire and break into tears on the court.
Later, it was revealed that the man had been following her for some time and had shown signs of “fixated behavior” towards the former Major champion.

Unfortunately, the Emma Raducanu incident was not an isolated phenomenon, as Muchova faced a similar situation at the US Open. During her match against Sorana Cirstea in New York, she noticed her ex-boyfriend had situated himself directly opposite to her bench, and was causing her distractions, leading her to tears. She did not make any official complaints but revealed the distress it had caused her.
Amanda Anisimova’s Tearful Speech at Wimbledon Final
Reaching her maiden Major final at this year’s Wimbledon, it was expected that the upcoming final between Amanda Anisimova and Iga Świątek would be a thrilling affair. However, it turned out to be a one-sided hammering by the Pole, who won the match without dropping a single game.
After the match, Anisimova was understandably moved to tears, stating she “ran out of gas” in the match. However, the two would play two more times at the US Open and at the WTA Finals, both of which were won by Anisimova.
Grigor Dimitrov’s Heartbreak at Wimbledon
Wimbledon was scenes of another heartbreak as Grigor Dimitrov had to retire from his fourth-round match against Jannik Sinner due to a pectoral injury. Coming into the match, the Italian had a 4-1 head-to-head record and had won his last four matches against the Bulgarian.
However, in a huge surprise, it was Dimitrov who won the first two sets, and looked set to script a huge upset before suffering a torn pectoral muscle during the early stages of the third set.
Novak Djokovic Moved To Tears In Memory of His Former Mentor
After his victory over Alejandro Tabilo at the Hellenic Championship, it was an emotional time for Novak Djokovic.
The organizers had produced a tribute video for Nicola Pilic, who was a former coach for the Serb. Seeing the video, he was moved to tears and stated that Pilic was a “part of his family” and an integral part of his tennis journey.
