Holger Rune’s Stockholm Open campaign came to a heartbreaking end as the Danish star left the court in tears after suffering a painful foot injury during his semifinal battle against France’s Ugo Humbert. The top seed was forced to retire midway through the match, cutting short a promising Swedish ATP 250 tournament run.
Rune, leading 6-4, 2-2 at the time, appeared to sustain the injury while scrambling to return a shot, collapsing in visible agony before signaling to his team that he could not continue.
What Happened to Holger Rune’s Foot During the Stockholm Open?
Rune’s emotional exit marked yet another chapter in his turbulent 2025 season, marred by recurring physical setbacks. The 22-year-old has been plagued by injuries throughout the year, with issues in his legs, back, and wrist frequently disrupting his rhythm on tour.
The incident unfolded in a matter of seconds. Serving at 2-2 in the second set, Humbert sent a wide serve to Rune’s backhand before driving his next shot deep into open space. Rune sprinted laterally to chase it down but appeared to lose his footing mid-air, landing awkwardly on his left leg. He immediately clutched the lower part of his leg and signaled for medical help.

According to multiple reports, Rune told the physio that he heard a “pop” near his Achilles tendon, prompting fears of a serious injury. The 2022 champion was seen limping to his bench, tears streaming down his face, as medical staff assessed the damage. After several minutes, he officially retired from the match, leaving the court to a standing ovation from the Swedish crowd.

The scare came just a day after Rune battled another physical challenge in his quarterfinal against Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry. In that match, he required a medical timeout in the third set for pain in the same leg but pushed through to seal a gritty 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
What Physical Setbacks Have Interrupted Rune’s Seasons?
Beyond leg injuries, Rune has suffered a twisted right ankle at the 2022 French Open and a persistent wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympics. Back inflammation and knee issues have also forced him out of key tournaments in 2023 and 2025.
Even off-court health challenges, such as food poisoning during the Monte-Carlo Masters and a twisted right knee in Madrid warm-ups, have interrupted his seasons.
Fourth seed Umbert was granted a walkover victory, and he will now play either third seed Denis Shapovalov or second seed Casper Ruud in the final.
