Taylor Fritz Reveals What Exactly Made Him Opt for a Medical Timeout Before Reaching Wimbledon Semifinal

Taylor Fritz clarified his medical timeout was just a routine tape job, not blisters, as he advanced to his first Wimbledon semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz.

Taylor Fritz was caught on camera calling for what looked like medical attention during his Wimbledon quarterfinal, sending fans into a frenzy of speculation.

But the American quickly put those concerns to rest with a simple explanation: he just needed his foot tape fixed. What seemed like a potential injury scare turned out to be routine maintenance that happens more often than tennis fans realize.

How Did Taylor Fritz Reach His First Wimbledon Semifinal?

Taylor Fritz is enjoying the best Wimbledon run of his career, and it hasn’t been easy. The World No. 5 had to grind through two brutal five-set matches against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo before dispatching 26th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round.

After receiving a walkover from Jordan Thompson, Fritz entered the quarterfinals, where he faced his toughest test yet. The match against 17th seed Karen Khachanov turned into a rollercoaster, with Fritz taking the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 before Khachanov stormed back to win the third set 6-1. However, Fritz regrouped and closed out the match 7-6(4) in the fourth set after two hours and 36 minutes of play.

This victory booked a spot in his first semifinal at the All England Club. The achievement marks Fritz’s second Grand Slam semifinal after reaching the final of the 2024 US Open, making him the first American man to advance this far at Wimbledon since John Isner in 2018.

What Really Happened During Fritz’s Medical Timeout?

The drama unfolded during the third set when cameras caught Fritz calling for a medical timeout near the end of what would become Khachanov’s dominant 6-1 set victory. Viewers immediately began speculating about a potential foot injury, with many wondering if the 27-year-old was dealing with blisters or something more serious.

Fritz quickly addressed the situation during his post-match press conference, making it clear that there was no actual injury.

“There’s nothing actually wrong with my feet,” Fritz told reporters. “I don’t have blisters or anything like that. It’s a pretty common tape job that a lot of players do, more so on hard courts when you’re sliding a lot, but I have it done on everything. And it’s just some pads that are under your feet because my skin gets irritated from moving and sliding in the shoes.”

Why Do Tennis Players Use Preventative Foot Taping?

Fritz went into detail about why this type of taping is so common among professional players. The tape serves as a protective barrier rather than a medical treatment, designed to prevent skin irritation from the constant movement and friction inside tennis shoes.

“A lot of players get it done,” Fritz explained. “For whatever reason, in two of the matches here, I ripped the pad. Like, it just got moved from me moving during the match. So it gets uncomfortable once the tape comes loose in the shoe. So, I’m just getting it retaped. And that’s basically all it is.”

The American emphasized that this was purely preventative care, not a response to an existing problem. “It’s not blisters. It’s just the skin gets rubbed raw from moving around in the shoe from the friction. Like I said, it’s pretty common. It’s more of a preventative thing. If I were to play a five-setter at the Open where I’m sliding around the court a lot, if I wasn’t taped up like this, the next day I wouldn’t be able to move.”

This type of maintenance becomes even more crucial during long matches and tournaments, where players need to ensure their feet can handle the physical demands of multiple matches over several days. Fritz’s explanation shows how professional tennis players must manage even the smallest details to maintain peak performance.

Looking ahead, Fritz will face his biggest challenge yet when he takes on two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. This will mark their third meeting on the ATP Tour, with Fritz hoping his foot maintenance pays off in what promises to be another grueling battle.
