After Sloane Stephens Goes Silent On-Air, Fans Rip Into CoCo Vandeweghe’s Controversial Coco Gauff Comments at French Open

Tennis fans took to social media in full force following a tense exchange between CoCo Vandeweghe and Sloane Stephens during the 2025 French Open broadcast on TNT Sports.

The disagreement, which played out live on-air as the two analyzed Coco Gauff’s semifinal match against French wildcard Loïs Boisson, left many viewers stunned. They described it as Vandeweghe’s overly aggressive behavior toward her fellow analyst.

Fans Slam CoCo Vandeweghe for Tense On-Air Clash With Sloane Stephens

Both Stephens and Vandeweghe are part of the TNT Sports commentary team for Roland Garros this year, joining former pro Sam Querrey in the studio. While differing opinions are standard in tennis analysis, this particular clash struck a nerve with fans who felt that Vandeweghe crossed a professional line by dismissing Stephens’ commentary in a way that appeared both forceful and dismissive.

The tension came to a head when Stephens offered a measured take on how Gauff should manage the crowd pressure during her match against Boisson. “She’s had that experience,” Stephens said calmly. “But I do think that to just keep it very nice and neutral today, she’s got to stay calm, no gasoline to the fire, and just play.”

Before she could even complete her thought, Vandeweghe jumped in, saying, “I don’t care how much experience you have. If you have the amount of crowd, the amount of voice, the amount of volume…,” cutting off Stephens and visibly taking over the conversation. Viewers noted that Stephens appeared uncomfortable and even physically recoiled, shrinking back in her seat during the interaction.

Clips of the moment quickly made the rounds online, including two video posts shared on Threads that captured Stephens being interrupted mid-sentence.

Fans did not hold back in the comments. One user wrote: “@sloanestephens I so wish we were friends so we could have laughed about the insufferable comments CoCo Vandeweghe made to you… She was so stupidly wrong and though not intentionally disrespectful, I can’t remember the last time I saw a cohost so attack the POV of another host!!”

The user went on to describe how Stephens had praised Gauff’s mental strength, only for Vandeweghe to aggressively counter her take “with her whole body,” which made Stephens visibly retreat.

Others accused Vandeweghe of constantly centering herself in commentary and showing signs of “jealousy” over players like Gauff, who have achieved more in singles competition. “Seldom right, never in doubt,” another fan commented. “She gave a bad take… then she doubled down, and you could tell the guys were mentally rolling their eyes, then the host finally cut her off because it was getting awkward. She needs to ease off the throttle a bit.”

Another viewer posted, “CCV is so bad. They need to cut her off. Not sure how/why she got this job. Try Shelby Rodgers? Only problem I have with Sloane is she is too quiet. I think she has a lot more to offer but rarely speaks up. Maybe this is why.”

Fans Unimpressed With Vandeweghe’s Delivery and Commentary Demeanor

Several fans echoed similar sentiments, criticizing Vandeweghe not just for her tone during the disagreement but for her general commentary style. “Vandeweghe is insufferable,” one person remarked. “She never shuts up during a match and continues to talk about herself and her career. It’s so annoying and sounds like it comes from a tinge of jealousy because she never won any major titles. Any match she calls, I immediately put on mute.”

Others jumped to Stephens’ defense, praising her restraint and potential as a rising broadcaster. “Sloane is just starting, and I have no doubt she will get better as she gains more experience in broadcasting. Even so, she is so much better than CCV purely because she doesn’t spend most of the time boasting about herself,” one fan noted.

Others didn’t hold back in comparing the two former pros directly. “FauxCo doesn’t hold a candle to Sloane or Coco,” one user wrote pointedly. “What singles slam has she won? Runner-up for… I’ll wait. Barty carried her for the doubles.”

And another simply added: “CocoVandey needs to go away. Insufferable. So sick of her.”

    1. I would have to agree. Each time I watch tennis, I hope it’s not Coco calling the match. Otherwise I mute it or don’t watch the match at all. It’s painful to watch TC Live when she’s there.

When she’s not talking about herself, she’s subtly insulting or talking gossip of other players. Please consider replacing her. Shelby Roberts was great when she commentated briefly for TC.

    2. Yes PLEASE. Tennis Channel powers that be please give someone else an opportunity at the desk, other than Coco V. It would be a breath of fresh air. She always seems to find a way to insert chatter about herself . She just had to mention, during Sabalenka vs Masarova today, “….When I came back from all my injuries , San Jose…hard court . From the matches I remember I’m one and one.” She spoke of Sabalenka’s power as a younger player. Then she spoke of herself, saying,”….I was one of those players that had immense amounts of power…..”. I just think a change would be nice from time to time.

    3. Wannabe CocoV is horrifying. Always about herself and how great she thought she was as a player. By the way she was a joke on the tennis court. Get her out of announcing totally.
