Novak Djokovic Battles Sickness During US Open Opener

Following his opening-round loss at the Cincinnati Open, Djokovic took on Navone in just his second singles match of the North American hardcourt swing at the US Open. The Serb ran into an issue early in the encounter, calling for the physiotherapist and receiving medication while leading 5-4 in the first set. He was also seen icing his head at his bench.

Although Navone overcame a 1-4 deficit to clinch the first set, Djokovic leveled the score by taking the second set. As the match crossed the three-hour mark, the 39-year-old’s struggles appeared to intensify as he was seen throwing up at the back of the court.

The concerning scenes prompted a worried reaction from his wife, Jelena, who was showing her support from the stands alongside their children, Stefan and Tara.

Despite battling through his health issues to win the third set, Djokovic’s problems persisted in the fourth set as he appeared to be dealing with cramps. He was also seen using an inhaler during a changeover.

The 39-year-old also took a fall in the set, prompting another worried reaction from his wife. Navone capitalized on Djokovic’s struggles and secured a crucial break to take a 4-2 lead. The Argentine went on to win the fourth set to force a decider.
