The tennis world witnessed the ferocious side of the American legend, John McEnroe, once again when he lashed out at a fan at the Melbourne airport. Despite his repeated refusals, the fan persisted in requesting a photograph with him, given his legendary status in professional tennis.
Nick Kyrgios Reacts to John McEnroe’s Melbourne Airport Incident
When the fan kept following McEnroe, he lost his temper, shouting, “Go f*** yourself,” unleashing the fearless side of himself that he was known for during his career. This incident caught the attention of Australian star Nick Kyrgios, who recently reacted to it and shared his thoughts.
After the conclusion of the 2026 Australian Open, the seven-time Grand Slam Champion McEnroe returned to his home via a not-so-smooth journey. As the legend arrived at the airport, a fan met him outside and offered to help with his luggage. After McEnroe turned down his assistance, the fan asked for a photograph with him, to which the ESPN commentator replied, “I need you to stay away from me.”
However, the fan did not understand it and kept following the former player, despite him clearly saying, “Not right now, mate.” This angered the American, who felt his privacy was being invaded as the fan entered the airport with him, still refusing to leave him alone. McEnroe had to raise his voice to get assistance from the airport security, who then helped to create some distance between them.
This incident was posted on Instagram by The Daily Mail’s regional account, which caught the attention of 2022 Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios, who shared his thoughts in the comments. He wrote,
“Not easy out here😕 can understand both sides.”

This one sentence from Kyrgios explains the situation perfectly. The fan was mesmerized after seeing the American legend and wanted a photo, which is understandable, but since McEnroe wasn’t in the mood for a picture and had refused multiple times already, he should’ve respected the American’s privacy and left him alone.
What made the situation even worse was how this exchange between McEnroe and the fan ended. After security helped in distancing the fan from the seven-time Grand Slam champion, he shouted, “I still love you, John,” to which McEnroe replied, “Go f*** yourself,” giving fans flashbacks from his on-court incidents.
These three words once potentially cost McEnroe his Australian Open campaign in a fourth-round match in 1990. He was leading two sets to one when he couldn’t control his nerves during the match.
At the time, according to the rules, a player had three warnings before he would receive another and be defaulted from the tournament; however, the Australian Open changed this rule, implementing a new set of regulations that reduced the count from four to three. McEnroe wasn’t aware of this change and completely ignored it, verbally abusing the tournament supervisor, and was immediately disqualified for a fourth violation.
McEnroe’s airport incident made headlines after the conclusion of the year’s first Grand Slam, where Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina dominated the fortnight. The Kazakh champion won her second Grand Slam after the 2022 Wimbledon Championship, defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who was competing in her fourth consecutive final.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, completed his Career Grand Slam after defeating the 10-time Champion Novak Djokovic in a four-set match, becoming the youngest male player ever to win all the majors at least once.
