Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka may have exited the 2025 Bad Homburg Open in the second round, but the former World No. 1 left a lasting impression with a rare act of honesty mid-match.
During a tense second-set rally against fifth seed Emma Navarro, Osaka surprised everyone by stopping play and conceding a point she felt she hadn’t earned fairly, telling the chair umpire she had spoken during the point, which is considered a hindrance under WTA rules.
Naomi Osaka’s Honest Admission Leaves Crowd and Umpire Stunned
The moment came in the second set, with the score tied at 3-3 and Osaka trailing 0-15. As the rally unfolded, the Japanese star, mid-exchange, paused after the point and walked toward the umpire to acknowledge that she had inadvertently spoken during the rally.
Talking during a point is considered a hindrance under WTA rules, and such an admission typically results in the point being awarded to the opponent.
The chair umpire confirmed the situation to the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Osaka talked during the point… Point Miss Navarro, love-30.” Osaka’s candid gesture drew praise from the crowd and commentators, especially as it came at a potentially pivotal stage in the match. That point proved crucial, with Osaka ultimately dropping the game and eventually the match, 4-6, 4-6.

Osaka, who entered the German grass-court event as a wildcard, was looking to gain match experience ahead of Wimbledon. She had notched a hard-fought 7-6(6), 7-6(4) victory over Serbian qualifier Olga Danilović in the opening round.
Serena Williams’ Ex-Coach Rick Macci Shares Thoughts on Osaka’s Bad Homburg Run
After her exit from the WTA 500 tournament, Rick Macci shared his thoughts on Osaka’s performance, pointing out areas she’s struggling with that are limiting her potential on grass.
“Some players cannot play maybe as well on grass because they do not like it. Remember if you do not like it the grass feels the same way about you. @naomiosaka,” Macci wrote on X.
In a separate post, he praised her sliced serve but noted her baseline timing and control aren’t as sharp as before.
“Osaka and her serve on grass is one of the best if she is using her slice. Her serve alone can keep her right there with anybody. But she is not controlling the baseline like in the past and her ability to run thru balls and produce quality is a few milliseconds late,” he wrote.
