Naomi Osaka has made a habit of turning heads with her custom Nike outfits at Grand Slams, and the 2026 French Open is no exception. The former world No. 1 once again stole the spotlight ahead of her first-round clash against Laura Siegemund, arriving in an eye-catching ensemble before dramatically revealing her on-court outfit. After their tense battle, Siegemund shared her thoughts on Osaka’s outfit with a subtle dig.

The Japanese star backed up the fashion statement with an impressive display, winning the opening set in commanding fashion. Despite voicing her frustration over Siegemund’s lengthy delay between points in the second set, Osaka went on to claim a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory to advance to the second round.
Following her loss, Siegemund was asked by Eurosport Germany about Osaka’s outfit reveal, but she dismissed the topic. She emphasized that her focus was on playing tennis, not on putting on a “fashion show,” in what appeared to be a jab at Osaka.
“I couldn’t care less. I come here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show. If other people want to put on a fashion show, that’s fine by me. I do find it a bit problematic sometimes, though, at every tournament, they scrutinize every last second until you’ve finally managed to get your water bottle unpacked,” she said.

Why Naomi Osaka Was ‘Scared’ About Her French Open Outfit
Osaka later opened up about her striking outfit during her post-match press conference, comparing it to the illuminated Eiffel Tower at night. The 28-year-old also revealed her fears of potentially being asked to change because of the outfit’s reflective qualities.
“Ironically, when I first saw the dress in real life, I felt like I look like the Eiffel Tower at night time, when it’s like bright. And then I actually got a little worried because when the sun hits the dress, it reflects a lot. I was a little scared that the umpire was gonna like kick me off the court. So I got like two backup normal Nike dresses. Shout out Nike. Thank god I didn’t have to wear them though. I thought the reflection of the dress was really beautiful,” she said.
Up next, Naomi Osaka will lock horns with Donna Vekić in the second round of the French Open. The former world No. 1 will have an edge heading into the showdown, having emerged victorious in both of their previous tour-level encounters. Osaka’s most recent win over Vekić came at the 2019 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on clay, where she battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4) triumph.
