Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou has seen and analyzed the sport’s biggest rivalries over the years, and this time he has taken on a major debate- whether the Carlos Alcaraz–Jannik Sinner rivalry can be compared to the legendary Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal rivalry.
Patrick Mouratoglou Says Carlos Alcaraz vs. Jannik Sinner Is Unlike Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
Over the past two years, Alcaraz and Sinner have completely taken over men’s tennis. Just like Federer and Nadal once did, they have created an era of the “Big 2,” but in their own way. Together, they have won every single Grand Slam title in 2024 and 2025. Alcaraz now has six majors, Sinner has four, and the two of them have shared the No. 1 ranking for all of 2024 and 2025.
However, Mouratoglou believes that their rivalry can’t be compared to the Federer-Nadal rivalry, and it is not because the new generation is any weaker. Instead, the Frenchman believes Alcaraz and Sinner are creating something completely different from anything the sport has seen before.
“You can’t compare the rivalry Roger-Rafa and the rivalry Jannik-Carlos. Before the Big 3, there was a Big 2, that was Roger and Rafa. They were winning everything. Until a little Serbian came in the mix and changed the whole thing,” Mouratoglou stated on Instagram.
He pointed out, unlike the Federer–Nadal rivalry, where Nadal usually had the upper hand, there is no such imbalance between Sinner and Alcaraz.
“At the moment, we have a Big 2 as well, with Carlos and Jannik. They are dominating outrageously the tour. That’s true that when Rafa and Roger were dominating, Roger was the best, but Rafa was beating Roger because of the matchup between them,” he said.
Mouratoglou continued, “At the moment, I cannot compare. I cannot say that Carlos has really an edge over Jannik. I think they are so close in terms of level. If you look at the matches, especially the Roland-Garros final, you can see the difference is almost nothing, on a match.”
Mouratoglou believes this kind of balance and constant adjustment between them makes their rivalry totally different from the ones anyone has seen in the past.
“Even though Carlos has won many more times against Jannik than Jannik against Carlos, if you look at the matches, they are crazy close. So, I can’t say that it’s the same as what was happening with Roger and Rafa. And I think both of the guys are really dominating everybody. So, it’s a different situation,” he concluded.
Mouratoglou’s Advice for Alcaraz for 2026
As the Alcaraz–Sinner rivalry continues, Mouratoglou thinks that one important factor will decide who stays on top in 2026. And in his view, the bigger pressure is on Alcaraz. “If he [Alcaraz] wants to dominate 2026, improvements must start with the first two shots, serve and return,” Mouratoglou wrote on LinkedIn.
According to Mouratoglou, this is the area where Sinner currently holds a historic advantage. “Because Jannik is currently No. 1 in the world in serve+1 AND return+1. That’s unique. We’ve had players dominate one side of that equation, Roger on serve+1, Rafa and Novak on the return, but never both. This is something new in tennis history,” the Frenchman added.
Sinner’s ability to manage both attack and defense, his powerful serve, and his quick reading of returns allow him to take control of rallies right from the start. That stability is what gives him an edge over Alcaraz for now, whose explosive, all-court game still relies heavily on momentum.
