Jannik Sinner’s Mentality Highlighted by Patrick Mouratoglou Through Italian’s ATP Finals Act Against Carlos Alcaraz

Most fans watching the 2025 ATP Finals saw a great match, but Patrick Mouratoglou noticed the exact moment the psychological tide turned. In a breakdown of the championship clash, the renowned coach pinpointed a split-second decision by Jannik Sinner that went largely unnoticed by the crowd but decided the outcome.

Mouratoglou argues that this single high-risk execution under pressure reveals more about Sinner’s evolution than the trophy itself.

What Did Patrick Mouratoglou See in Jannik Sinner’s Risky Second Serve?

The moment of truth arrived late in the first set. Carlos Alcaraz led 6-5 and held a set point against Sinner’s serve. Sinner missed his first serve. Most players in that spot would kick a safe second serve in to start the point. Sinner didn’t do that. Instead, the Italian blasted a 187 km/h second serve, aiming right for the corner.

Mouratoglou couldn’t believe the audacity of the choice. He highlighted it “As an example of the ability of Jannik to take responsibility and risks on second serves,” he observed. “He had a set point against him in the final… Second serve Sinner – he serves a second serve at 187 kmph, just in the corner, taking a crazy risk, and he saves it, and he ends up winning the set and then the match.”

This wasn’t a mistake or a rush of blood to the head. It was a calculated strike. Mouratoglou pointed to Sinner’s own explanation to show just how deliberate it was: “And after the match, he said, ‘Okay, I had three options. I took the riskiest one, but if I had to lose it, I had to lose it on my terms.'”

That specific quote tells Mouratoglou everything he needs to know. “So that says a lot about his mental mindset coming up to that final,” he explained. While Alcaraz is famous for his fearlessness in big moments, Sinner showed he has leveled up his own mental game to match it.

The match lived up to the hype of a historic 2025 season, with Sinner fighting through to a 7-6(4), 7-5 victory. Defending his ATP Finals crown was huge, but the way he did it was even more impressive. The win extended his dominance on indoor hard courts to a staggering 31 consecutive matches.

Alcaraz still ends the year as the World No. 1 after reclaiming the top spot with wins at Roland Garros and the US Open. But Sinner’s performance in Turin sent a clear message that the gap between them is non-existent.

With this title, the two young icons split the biggest prizes of the year perfectly. Sinner added this trophy to his Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, ensuring both players finished with two Grand Slams apiece.

The razor-thin margins in the Turin final proved just how close this rivalry really is. Alcaraz might have the No. 1 ranking next to his name, but Sinner’s fearless play under pressure showed he is every bit the Spaniard’s equal as they define the modern era of tennis.
