Just hours before his 2025 Wimbledon quarterfinal clash against Ben Shelton on Wednesday, July 9, Jannik Sinner returned to training wearing an arm sleeve. The Italian raised injury concerns in his previous match after a fall in the very first game against Grigor Dimitrov.
In the match, the Italian, who was struggling with an elbow discomfort, was two sets down. In the third set, though, Dimitrov was forced to retire after suffering a devastating pectoral injury.
Jannik Sinner Returned to Practice After Injury Concerns at Wimbledon
The top seed escaped a major upset against the 19th seed, as Grigor Dimitrov came out strong, taking the first two sets 6-3, 7-5, but fate had other plans. In the third set, with the score tied at 2-2, Dimitrov, who was blasting high-speed aces throughout the contest, began showing signs of discomfort and suddenly collapsed due to a pectoral muscle injury.
After receiving medical attention, he returned to the court in tears and was forced to concede the match to Jannik Sinner, marking his fifth consecutive retirement from a Grand Slam. After a match that lasted 2 hours and eight minutes, Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals and revealed his injury concerns.
“I don’t take this as a win at all… This is just a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us,” Sinner said during his post-match on-court interview.
The 23-year-old had to cut back on outdoor practice on Tuesday after undergoing an MRI scan ahead of his upcoming clash against Ben Shelton. While awaiting the results, he practiced on indoor hard courts, with co-coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill feeding him balls.
The next day, just hours before his match against the 10th seed, Sinner was spotted practicing on grass with 17-year-old Jacopo Vasamì, the world junior No. 2. He was wearing a protective sleeve on his right arm.

While there hasn’t been an official statement from the player regarding his injury concerns, he seemed to be in good spirits during the practice session.

Before his match against Dimitrov, Jannik Sinner secured straight-sets wins against Luca Nardi, Aleksandar Vukic, and Pedro Martinez. He is now gearing up for his seventh encounter against Ben. The Italian leads the head-to-head against the American 5-1.
