Iga Świątek Previews Alexandra Eala Test at Wimbledon

Going into this third-round match, the head-to-head between Świątek and Eala stands at 1-1. The 21-year-old stunned the Pole at their first meeting in Miami last year.

Świątek, who leveled the head-to-head with a hard-fought win over Eala at the 2025 Madrid Open, knows that she cannot afford to take Eala lightly.

“I don’t particularly know her game on grass. Obviously, you can watch a little bit. But I know how she plays because we’ve played already. She has a tricky game. I can assume on grass that it’s even more tricky because of the surface,” Świątek said during her post-match press conference after defeating Karolína Plíšková on Thursday.

Eala has made an impressive start to the grass-court swing, winning the Birmingham Classic and reaching the semifinals in Berlin. She started her Wimbledon campaign with a straightforward win over Renata Zarazúa before coming from behind to defeat Serena Williams’ conqueror Maya Joint in the second round.

Świątek believes that Eala has several tools in her arsenal and is expecting a challenging third-round assignment in what will be their first grass-court battle on Saturday.

“She’s using her strengths, the change of rhythm and everything. So I will prepare and I’ll be ready. It will be a good challenge for me because she doesn’t give that rhythm. I’ll need to be ready for different kinds of shots,” she added.

The defending champion had to overcome a scare in her Wimbledon opener against Taylor Townsend. She managed to eke her way into the second round with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 score. She delivered a much more dominant performance against Plíšková, looking very much in control throughout.

The season so far has not gone according to plan for Świątek, with doubts emerging over her ability to maintain the success she has enjoyed on the WTA Tour in recent years. However, the 25-year-old is starting to find her rhythm at Wimbledon and will hope that her 6-1, 6-3 win over Plíšková can be the springboard to another deep run at the All England Club.
