Denmark’s Holger Rune is making tennis headlines due to his controversial actions in a recent match. On Sunday, he faced a difficult end to his Davis Cup qualifier match against Spain’s Pedro MartÃnez in Marbella. The World No. 11 lost a hard-fought three-set battle that lasted over three hours, but it was the post-match scenes that caught attention.
What Did Holger Rune Do After His Davis Cup Match?
Rune went down 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3) to Martinez in their singles rubber at the Club de Tenis Puente Romano. The Spaniard dominated the first set, not letting Rune build any serious momentum, winning it 6-1. The Dane fought back to clinch the second set 6-4, showing resilience with some excellent shots. In the decisive set, both players showed equal prowess, and it went into a tiebreak, which the Spaniard won, taking the match in his favour. However, it was not Rune’s defeat that caught everyone’s attention; it was something that happened after the match concluded.
After the defeat, Rune completed the traditional handshake with MartÃnez at the net. However, when he approached the chair umpire, Roberto Ranieri, he raised his hand but then walked away without shaking his hand with him. Video footage shared online showed Rune going directly to his seat and kit bag instead of following through with the customary gesture to the official.

The match turned tense during the deciding set when controversial calls from the chair umpire frustrated the Danish player. Tennis journalist Jose Morgado explained the scenario, voicing his frustration on X. Calling the umpire’s call “HORRENDOUS,” he wrote, “That was NEVER a double bounce. It happened the same against Martinez earlier in this set. Two very, very poor errors from the chair umpire. Crazy.”
What an absolutely HORRENDOUS CALL from the umpire here.
That was NEVER a double bounce.
It happened the same against Martinez earlier in this set.
Two very, very poor errors from the chair umpire. Crazy.

A X user supported these words, adding their opinion while explaining why the decision fueled Rune. They wrote, “Horrendous call is an understatement. Rune had a real good chance at 40-40 there.”
This incident shows how sometimes an umpire’s decision can spark anger amongst players, especially when the match is very close. Rune’s action showcased that humans can make errors, too, even on the biggest stages.
What Happened in Rune’s Davis Cup Match?
The three-hour, 15-minute encounter saw Martinez secure a crucial victory with strong serving statistics for Spain. The Spanish player won 100 points compared to Rune’s 87, despite the Dane having more aces (2-0). MartÃnez converted four of his eight break-point chances, while Rune managed three from five opportunities.
Both players struggled with double faults, committing three each during the intense clay court battle. Martinez’s victory helped Spain fight back in the tie after Denmark had taken an early 2-0 lead through Rune’s wins over Pablo Carreño Busta and Elmer Møller’s 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jaume Munar.
The result leveled the Davis Cup qualifier at 2-2, with Spain needing the win to keep their hopes alive of reaching the Final 8 in Bologna. MartÃnez, ranked 67th in the world, delivered when his country needed him most against the much higher-ranked Rune. The victory came after Spain had won the doubles rubber to stay in contention for a spot in the prestigious Davis Cup Finals.
