How WTA Stars Reacted to Markéta Vondroušová’s Statement on Her Four-Year Ban

On Monday, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that an independent tribunal had imposed a four-year ban on Vondroušová after she refused to undergo an out-of-competition anti-doping test in December 2025.

The Czech star has maintained that her decision was influenced by “fear” and an “acute stress reaction” after a doping test official arrived at her home “late at night without properly identifying themselves or following protocol.” Although she reiterated this account in her testimony, the tribunal concluded there was “no compelling justification” for her refusal.

Addressing the decision, ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse emphasized that “unpredictable testing is an essential tool to protect clean sport,” adding that the ruling serves as an important reminder to players “that refusal comes with significant risk.”

In an emotional statement following the decision, Vondroušová opened up about the painful chapter, saying, “Waking up every day with uncertainty, fear, and the feeling that you are losing control over your own life is something that is difficult to put into words. It has been an incredibly exhausting and painful period that affected me far more deeply than I could ever have imagined.”

The 26-year-old highlighted her long history of compliance with anti-doping protocols, pointing out that she submitted to a test mere days after the incident, which returned a negative result.

“I have never doped. I have never had a positive test. Throughout my entire career, I have undergone countless anti-doping controls and have always stepped onto the court with a clear conscience. Just three days after the incident that ultimately changed my life, I was tested again. The result was negative. Just like every test before it,” she posted on Instagram.

Vondroušová went on to describe the emotional toll the situation had taken on her, saying, “Today, however, I cannot say what comes next. The last seven months have left marks that will not disappear overnight. They took away my joy, my confidence, and the sense of security I once had. And honestly, I do not know how long it will take to find those things again.”

The Olympic silver medalist concluded by expressing gratitude to her family, friends and support system for helping her endure the “darkest months” of her life.

Vondroušová’s fellow WTA stars were quick to rally around her, with Anna Kalinskaya, Paula Badosa, Coco Gauff, and Iva Jovic sending their love to the Czech in the comments.

With the ban prohibiting the Czech from competing in any events organized or sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Grand Slams, WTA, or any national association, support also poured in from Rebecca Šramková, Ons Jabeur, and Karolína Muchová.

Muchová further denounced the “harsh” ruling, saying, “I respect the fight for clean sport. I also believe fairness, consistency, and common sense matter. A four-year ban for this feels incredibly harsh and difficult to understand. Standing with you, Maky.”

Anett Kontaveit, Jule Niemeier, Lucia Bronzetti, Heather Watson, Clara Tauson, Daria Saville, and Peyton Stearns also shared encouraging messages.

Although Markéta Vondroušová has yet to reveal her next steps, she retains the right to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
