On the eve of the Wimbledon Championships, 2023 women’s singles champion Markéta Vondroušová has been handed a shock four-year suspension.
This follows the Czech athlete’s refusal of an out-of-competition anti-doping test in December 2025.
Markéta Vondroušová Handed Four-Year Ban After Refusing Anti-Doping Test
The decision was made by an independent tribunal after a hearing was held where Vondroušová attempted to explain that an unexpected visit from a doping control official late at night caused her to experience acute stress. She had also previously stated that she had been suffering from stress at the time and was afraid for her safety when an anti-doping official arrived at her house late at night.
Vondroušová also claimed that the tester arrived outside the time window she had given to the ITIA and failed to follow all the correct procedures.
However, Vondroušová’s justification did not change the tribunal’s mind, as she was handed the maximum penalty for the offense. The news was announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which had charged her with the offense in April.
The ban will be in place until June 21, 2030. During this suspension, she is not allowed to play, coach, or attend any events sanctioned by the WTA Tour, the ITF, or the Grand Slams.
This comes as a bitter blow for Vondroušová, a 2023 Wimbledon champion and 2020 Olympic silver medalist.
German tennis player Eva Lys shared her reaction to the “insane” news, sending her best wishes to Vondroušová.
“This is COMPLETELY insane. Sending so much love to Markéta,” she wrote on X.
Fans also called out the severity of the ban as they shared their support for Vondroušová.
“This seems very severe. Compared to someone that actually tested positive getting just a few months ban??? Make it make sense,” wrote one user.
Another fan commented on the impact this could have on Vondroušová’s career.
“Four years?! This’ll be the end of her career. Have to think there will be a big appeals process here,” they wrote.
A third fan backed Vondroušová to appeal the decision in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
“I don’t see how this holds under an appeal. Almost certainly will be significantly reduced right?” they wrote.
Vondroušová’s lawyer, Jan Exner, said in a statement shared via journalist Charlie Eccleshare that they would review their options before determining next steps and the appeals process.
Amid all this, Markéta Vondroušová has been struggling with recurring injuries and last competed on the WTA Tour in January.
