Daria Kasatkina Braces for Criticism as She Makes Bold Claim About Women’s Tennis With Alcaraz-Sinner Example

Daria Kasatkina compares Women's and Men's tennis tournaments, taking the Roland Garros final between Sinner-Alcaraz as an example.

Daria Kasatkina has recently offered her perspective on professional tennis, presenting a viewpoint that challenges prevailing perceptions about how tournaments are assessed and remembered by fans and the tennis community. During a conversation with the Australian Open, the 28-year-old player shared her thoughts regarding the quality and entertainment value of matches across different levels of the professional tour.

She acknowledged that her stance could attract considerable criticism but expressed that she was unafraid to defend her analysis and reasoning.

Daria Kasatkina’s Thoughts on Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments

Kasatkina argued that the inherent format differences between men’s and women’s Grand Slam finals have created an unfair framework through which people judge women’s tennis relative to men’s competition. She pointed to the 2025 French Open men’s final as a prime example, referencing the extraordinary showdown between top-ranked Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

She said, “I’ll get a lot of criticism for this, but I don’t care, because I think in the last few Grand Slams, women’s matches were more interesting than men’s.” Explaining the real reason behind this, Kasatkina added, “Because men play best of five in the finals, only because of the last match, they remember that,” pointing to the Sinner-Alcaraz finale, which extended for five hours and 29 minutes.

The match established a new record as the longest Roland Garros final ever contested in the Open Era of professional tennis, with Alcaraz ultimately prevailing over Sinner following a scoreline of 4–6, 6–7(4), 6–4, 7–6(3), 7–6(2).

Kasatkina explained that while this final undoubtedly captivated audiences with its drama and quality, it created a misleading impression about the overall quality and entertainment value of the tournament as a whole.

“The final is a very specific tennis match, where if you lose the first set and you play best of three, and you start losing in the second, most probably the match is over. Where on the men’s side, if you play best of five, you lost two sets in a row, you still got a chance,” she articulated, drawing a sharp distinction between the two formats.

Alcaraz’s triumph at Roland Garros perfectly exemplified this dynamic, as he recovered from being down two sets against the world’s top-ranked player, saving three consecutive championship points in the process and creating one of tennis’ most memorable recent moments.

The Broader Conversation in Professional Tennis

Kasatkina’s argument extends considerably beyond the discussion of individual matches and competitive drama. She contends that spectators predominantly remember men’s Grand Slams primarily because of their dramatic finals.

The 2025 French Open provides relevant context: while Coco Gauff defeated World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6–7(5), 6–2, 6–4 in the final, the entire tournament featured compelling narratives, including Loïs Boisson, a French wildcard ranked 361, advancing to the semifinals as the first Frenchwoman to reach that stage since Marion Bartoli in 2011, and Sabalenka ending Iga Świątek’s historic 26-match winning streak at the event.

Apart from these professional discussions, Kasatkina was involved in another debate on social media. Anastasia Potapova, another former Russian player, announced in December 2025 that she would transition to representing Austria in international competitions. Notably, Potapova’s announcement statement was strikingly similar to the language and phrasing that Kasatkina herself had used when she switched to Australia in March 2025.

Kasatkina herself acknowledged the parallel with characteristic humor, posting a skull emoji on social media and commenting, “And no, we are not from the same agency😂” to signal the resemblance was merely coincidental.
