Former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev became the first big casualty on Day 1 of Wimbledon when he suffered a shock exit at the hands of little-known Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. The Frenchman, ranked 64th in the world, played some of the best tennis of his career to stun Medvedev 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Medvedev’s third consecutive early exit at a slam has triggered immense concern among his fans, with many suggesting changes to the Russian’s coaching staff.
Notably, the Russian’s shock defeat against Bonzi came after a second-round loss to teenager Learner Tien at the Australian Open and a first-round loss to Cameron Norrie at Roland Garros last month.
How Fans Have Reacted to Daniil Medvedev’s Unexpected Loss to Benjamin Bonzi:
Medvedev’s unexpected loss to Bonzi has again triggered discussions online about the Russian’s sudden dip in form.
“What has happened to Medvedev?,” a tennis fan asked on X. “Used to be so consistent, regular QF, SF and finalist but dropped off so much and regressed this year.”

Tennis journalist Bastien Fachan, posting on X, pointed out that Daniil Medvedev has lost three straight Grand Slam main draw matches for the first time in his career.
The last time the Russian lost consecutive Grand Slam first-round matches was in 2017, at the Australian Open in his major tournament debut, followed by Roland-Garros.

Medvedev has traditionally performed well at Wimbledon. Last year, he was seeded 5th and reached the semifinals, defeating World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in five sets in the quarterfinals. However, eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz ended his run in the semifinals.
How Daniil Medvedev Has Fared in the 2025 Tennis Season
Once known for his consistency, Medvedev has shown signs of struggle throughout 2025. A 20-time winner on the tour, the Russian has failed to win a single trophy this year.
Although Medvedev has made deep runs in some tournaments, he has also fallen early in many tournaments to lower-ranked players.
The Russian did show brief flashes of his usual brilliance to reach the final of the Halle Open with a win over Alexander Zverev just ahead of Wimbledon. However, he fell in the summit clash to the in-form Alexander Bublik.
A former champion at the Nitto ATP Finals, Medvedev, is only ranked 16th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. With his loss at Wimbledon, the 29-year-old is set to fall outside the top 10, as per the live rankings chart.
