The prestigious WTA Finals brings together the world’s top eight singles players who earned their spots through ranking points over the season. This year’s field includes some of the strongest competitors on the women’s circuit, with multiple Grand Slam winners and high-ranking players. Four American players qualified this year, showing strong US tennis talent at the championship. Besides Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, and Amanda Anisimova all made the cut, demonstrating the depth of talent from the United States on the women’s tour.
Gauff Prepares for Title Defence in Riyadh
When Gauff made her WTA Finals debut in 2022 at just 18 years old, she struggled against the world’s elite in Fort Worth, Texas, losing all six matches across singles and doubles. Her first appearance was challenging, but she remained determined to improve. By 2023, Gauff had made significant progress and reached the semifinals of the WTA Finals, showing steady improvement at the championship level.
Last year proved to be her breakthrough, as Gauff’s incredible 2024 campaign in Riyadh saw her defeat both World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Iga Świątek en route to the final. She defeated Zheng Qinwen in a thrilling three-hour, four-minute championship match with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), winning her first WTA Finals title.
At just 20 years old, Gauff became the youngest player to win the WTA Finals since Maria Sharapova in 2004 and the first American since Serena Williams won in 2014. This season has been equally impressive, as Gauff won the French Open Grand Slam and Wuhan Open, cementing her dominance with a 47-14 win-loss record.
She enters Riyadh ranked third in the world and competing in the Stefanie Graf Group alongside World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, World No. 5 Pegula, and World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini.
