‘Completely out of Touch’ – John McEnroe Riles Tennis World Once Again With ‘Zero Effort’ French Open Commentary

Tennis legend John McEnroe has come under fire yet again at the French Open as fans and analysts voice frustration over his on-air comments.

The 2026 French Open has been plagued with a series of controversies, from the lack of electronic line calling and concerns over dangerous sponsor boards to the dispute over the prize money and criticism of the heat rule. Adding to the growing list of talking points, tennis legend John McEnroe has once again drawn backlash for his on-air commentary during the Major.

Why John McEnroe’s Commentary Has Sparked Controversy at the French Open

This is not the first time McEnroe has faced scrutiny over his remarks during TNT Sports’ French Open broadcast. He previously came under fire for his mispronunciation of Rafael Jódar’s name and for what fans described as talking “endlessly” during Jannik Sinner’s match.

The discourse resurfaced when a tennis account dedicated to American stars criticized McEnroe’s commentary for Jakub Menšík and Andrey Rublev’s fourth-round clash and contrasted it with the “amazing” analysis provided by Jim Courier during João Fonseca and Casper Ruud’s showdown.

“Hearing Jim Courier commentate Fonseca-Ruud while John McEnroe commentates Mensik-Rublev at the same time just shows you the levels to this. Courier gives amazing analysis and description while McEnroe says “oh that’s a big forehand”… McEnroe makes it so tough to watch with audio,” the user posted.

Tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg echoed the user’s sentiments, lamenting the American broadcasters’ apparent “addiction” to the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

“Thought TNT could’ve and should’ve been the fresh start to break the McEnroe addiction on American tennis broadcasting. There was no need to revert to this when there were so many better, fresher options for viewers that would grow the sport, Courier among them,” Rothenberg wrote.

One fan disagreed, saying they appreciated McEnroe’s “passion and honesty” and likened his role in tennis broadcasting to that of Charles Barkley and his outspoken personality on “Inside the NBA.”

However, Rothenberg countered that the comparison would be more fitting if McEnroe delivered his opinions in brief segments from a studio desk, rather than “blathering” during the on-air commentary.

“And if McEnroe was in a Barkley role at a studio desk, that would probably be better. But having him blathering in the booth for hours is not a good use of whatever gifts he has,” he said.

Fans were in agreement, criticizing McEnroe for making “zero effort” to familiarize himself with lesser-known players and offering only “bland platitudes” instead of in-depth analysis of matches.

“He puts in zero effort whatsoever. He doesn’t know who so many players are. Doesn’t know the games of the players he’s heard of. Just bland platitudes and stating the obvious. When will tv bosses see this?” one fan commented.

“He’s completely out of touch with the modern game, doesn’t seem to understand what’s happening other than that players need to “dig deep” when behind and avoid “stress” in their service games,’ another fan chimed in.

Meanwhile, others had the upcoming Wimbledon Championships on their minds, as they complained about McEnroe’s presence in the commentary box for the women’s final each year.

“It’s annoying on the BBC at Wimbledon when McEnroe always gets the women’s final despite not commentating on any other women’s match in the tournament and having limited knowledge of women’s tennis,” a fan posted.

“And in the UK too. It’s infuriating having him commentate the women’s Wimbledon final on BBC. So many better options,” said another.

With the players in the bottom half of the men’s draw battling it out in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, John McEnroe has spoken about the “unbelievable pressure” on No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev to win his maiden Grand Slam title at this year’s French Open. The German has a golden opportunity with Carlos Alcaraz sidelined and both Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic suffering early exits.

Zverev will square off against rising Jódar in the quarterfinals, with the winner of the match between Fonseca and Menšík waiting in the semifinals if he beats the Spaniard.

Such baloney! McEnroe is one of the only great announcers they’ve got. It’s the majority of others who have no idea when to stop blathering on during play.
