Coco Gauff Arrives in Berlin for Maiden Grass Event

Gauff recently defeated Aryna Sabalenka to claim her second Grand Slam singles title, becoming the first American to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 2015. This capped off an impressive clay-court season for the 21-year-old, who reached successive WTA 1000 finals in Madrid and Rome before her triumph.

The American spent some time with her boyfriend Jalen Sera before resuming her tennis season in Berlin after a break that lasted for a little over a week. A video shared by the Berlin Tennis Open’s official X handle showed Gauff stepping out of a car. The caption read:

“Guess who is not skipping Berlin? Coco Gauff is in.”

Gauff competed at the WTA 500 event last year and received a bye to the second round. Here, she beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(6), 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash with Ons Jabeur. The American won a tightly-contested opening set via a tiebreak before the Tunisian was forced to retire from the match.

In the semifinals, Gauff faced compatriot Jessica Pegula and lost 5-7, 6-7(2). Pegula went on to win the tournament after edging out Anna Kalinskaya 6-7(0), 6-4, 7-6(3).

Coco Gauff enters the grass-court season with a 31-8 win-loss record so far in the 2025 season. Barring her clay-court exploits, the World No. 2 reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and helped Team USA win the United Cup.

Coco Gauff Will Face Wang Xinyu in the Second Round of the Berlin Tennis Open

Gauff is seeded second at this year’s edition of the WTA 500 tournament and thus, received a bye to the second round. Here, she will take on Wang Xinyu, who has won just seven out of 19 WTA Tour matches so far in 2025. The Chinese made easy work of World No. 16 Daria Kasatkina in her opening fixture, winning 6-3, 6-2.

The two last squared off at this very tournament in 2022, with the Americant thrashing the Chinese 6-0, 6-4. Whoever comes out on top this time, will face either eighth seed Paula Badosa or World No. 10 Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals of the Berlin Tennis Open.
