Carlos Alcaraz’s Unbeaten Run Has John Isner, Steve Johnson Butting Heads Over Gap to Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner continue to dominate men’s tennis, but opinions remain divided on whether the Spaniard is pulling ahead in their growing rivalry.

The debate surrounding tennis’s defining rivalry has taken a new turn, with former American professionals offering differing views on whether Carlos Alcaraz is beginning to pull away from Jannik Sinner.

While the Spaniard currently sits atop the ATP rankings with a healthy points lead, some observers believe the separation may be temporary rather than decisive.

How Do Former American Pros View the Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner Gap Debate?

Not everyone agrees on whether Alcaraz is beginning to widen the gap. On the Nothing Major podcast, former American professionals Sam Querrey, John Isner, Steve Johnson, and Jack Sock debated the topic. Johnson suggested that Alcaraz’s improved consistency may be tilting the balance.

“I think so,” Johnson said when asked if the gap was widening. “I mean, because the only issue was that he’d lose early. He had that a few times, like last year and the year prior, and that just doesn’t even seem like it’s possible anymore.”

Isner pushed back, arguing that it is too early to reach that conclusion and pointing to Sinner’s recent dominance. “No, it’s too early to tell,” Isner said. “I think we all agreed that last year Sinner was the best player, even though he finished No. 2. He missed three months and was 500 points behind Carlos at the end of the year.”

Johnson immediately challenged that claim, replying, “We don’t all agree on that.” Querrey acknowledged that Sinner’s case still carries weight. “Yeah, there’s a valid argument for it for sure,” he said.

Isner reiterated his position that the debate remains unresolved. “Okay, so I mean, it’s too early to tell.” Querrey then pointed to the current rankings gap. “He’s got a 3,000-point lead.”

Isner responded by noting that the season is still young despite Alcaraz’s strong start. “Yes, he’s had a better start to the year than Sinner, but Sinner, in my mind looks like the gap’s not widening.” Querrey added, “A little widening. It’s widening a little bit.”

Johnson concluded the exchange by emphasizing how quickly things can change when the rivals meet again. “As soon as they play each other and Sinner wins, the gap closes. But as of now, until they play one another, the gap is widening.”

Both Alcaraz and Sinner are competing at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and could potentially face each other in the final. That matchup would materialize if the Spaniard gets past Daniil Medvedev and Sinner overcomes Alexander Zverev in their respective semifinal clashes.

A Statistical Look at the Alcaraz-Sinner Rivalry

Alcaraz and Sinner have effectively established a two-man stronghold over men’s tennis as of March 2026. Alcaraz leads the ATP rankings with 13,550 points, while Sinner sits at No. 2 with 10,400. The Italian’s ranking position comes despite missing a chunk of early 2025 due to suspension, meaning he has no ranking points to defend during the current ‘Sunshine Double’ stretch at Indian Wells and Miami.

In terms of career accomplishments, Alcaraz recently gained a statistical edge by completing the Career Grand Slam at the 2026 Australian Open, bringing his total to 7 Majors compared with Sinner’s 4. Yet the 2025 season illustrated just how evenly matched the two remain.

They split the four Grand Slam tournaments evenly, with Alcaraz capturing Roland Garros and the US Open while Sinner triumphed at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Alcaraz has reached a total of 60 weeks at World No. 1 as of early March, but he is still chasing Sinner’s record of 66 total weeks at the summit, a milestone the Italian reached primarily during his dominant 2024 and late 2025 runs.

Their rivalry has also been tightly contested head-to-head, with Alcaraz holding a 10-6 advantage at the ATP Tour level. Beyond their personal battle, their dominance over the rest of the field is striking. Sinner at No. 2 sits more than 5,000 ranking points ahead of Novak Djokovic at No. 3.
