Alcaraz’s split with Ferrero came as a significant shock to much of the tennis world and continues to be widely discussed days later. Alcaraz announced the move on Instagram, expressing sadness over the decision, while Ferrero mirrored those sentiments in his own social media message.
The development has since sparked a wave of opinions, with Woodbridge among the latest high-profile voices to weigh in.
“I think it will be difficult for Carlos to win a Grand Slam next year. We know he is capable, but I find this change, at this stage of his career, mind-boggling. We are talking about one of the greatest (player-coach) duos in history,” he said.
The Aussie pointed out Alcaraz’s struggles during Ferrero’s past absences from his box, noting that it could take months for the world No. 1 to adjust to the change. Woodbridge believes that Alcaraz’s archrival Sinner could capitalize on this and maintain his dominance next season, potentially even securing a rare three-peat in Melbourne.
“When Juan Carlos was not by his side in recent years, Carlos did not play as well. You could see him looking toward the stands, being more uncertain. It will take months for him to get used to it. Given this change, I think Jannik has an advantage and will achieve the triple in Melbourne,” he added.

Woodbridge’s comments, however, did not sit well with fans, many of whom rushed to defend Alcaraz and criticized the Australian. Some even pointed out that the world No. 1 had won multiple titles in 2025 despite Ferrero’s absence, directly challenging Woodbridge’s claims.

“This is the part of the offseason where I’m glad tennis is resuming in a few days and we get new news cycles. A player as good as Alcaraz will win with any coach. The fact that Ferraro stopped traveling as much and he won a good amount of titles without him further proves this,” another commented.
Following Ferrero’s departure, Samuel López will assume the role of Carlos Alcaraz’s coach for the initial part of 2026. López, who joined the team ahead of last season, worked closely with Ferrero to shape the Spaniard’s game across all facets.
