How Did Carlos Alcaraz Sustain His Ankle Injury During the Japan Open?

Alcaraz’s injury occurred during the opening set, with the score tied at 2-2. While attempting to approach the net, he rolled his left ankle on the hard court, causing immediate distress. He collapsed to the ground, clutching his face in pain, and remained there for several minutes. Medical staff applied a heavy bandage to his foot, allowing him to continue and secure a 6-4, 6-2 win over Báez in an hour and 21 minutes.

In his on-court interview, Alcaraz admitted, “I was scared. I’m not gonna lie. I felt my ankle and didn’t feel great. I’m just happy to be able to play after that. I will try to be ready for the next match…It was unlucky. In the first five minutes I thought I wouldn’t continue.”

Alcaraz Weighs Long-Term Implications Amid Busy ATP Schedule

Despite his determination, Spanish news portal Marca reported that Alcaraz is still experiencing pain 24 hours later and chose to rest on Friday, opting not to practice. He is scheduled to decide on his participation against Bergs based on his recovery.

Alcaraz’s decision is particularly significant as the ATP calendar intensifies in the coming weeks. With two Masters 1000 events and the ATP Finals on the horizon, alongside the King Six Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia, the Spaniard must consider the long-term implications of his health. His physiotherapist, Juanjo Moreno, is closely monitoring his condition to ensure a balanced approach to recovery and competition.

As of Friday evening, Alcaraz has not publicly announced whether he will compete against Bergs. The tennis world eagerly awaits his decision, as his health could significantly influence the remainder of his season.
