When Andy Roddick Spoke About His Son Hank Not Knowing About His Professional Tennis Career

Last year, in an interview with OK!, Roddick mentioned that his son, Hank, was unaware of his father’s tennis career. He revealed that it wasn’t until he took Hank to a live podcast show in Atlanta that the young boy realized his father’s connection to the sport.

“It’s pretty fun — and my kids didn’t know I had anything to do with tennis. My son came to a live podcast show recently we did in Atlanta, so for him to see it, it’s weird for him but fun for me because it’s kind of like my two different lives merging,” Roddick said.

Roddick stated that while he never hid the fact that he played tennis, he didn’t have any tennis-related items in their home, which may have caused Hank some confusion.

“I didn’t hide the fact that I played, but we don’t have anything in our house from our jobs,” the father-of-two admits. “So my son knew, but he thought I was like a club coach. Then he went to kindergarten, and the world ruined it for him. They seem to like every other sport more than tennis!” he added.

Roddick retired from tennis in 2012 following a fourth-round loss to Juan Martin del Potro at that year’s US Open. During his career, he was ranked World No. 1 in the ATP rankings and won his sole Grand Slam title at the 2003 US Open, beating Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final. To this day, he is the last American to win the men’s singles title at the New York Major.
