Coco Gauff’s Wins Against Iga Świątek ‘Not Relevant’ Ahead of Madrid Open Clash, Claims Andy Roddick

Andy Roddick is clearly not of the opinion that Coco Gauff’s previous victories over Iga Świątek will play a significant role in their upcoming match at the 2025 Madrid Open.

This year, Gauff faced Świątek only once, during the final of the United Cup, where the American emerged victorious with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Last year, at the WTA 1000 clay court tournament in Madrid, Świątek won the title by defeating defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the finals. Gauff, on the other hand, reached the fourth round before being defeated by Madison Keys.

Coco Gauff Will Take On Iga Świątek in the 2025 Madrid Open Semifinal

Świątek is seeded second at the 2025 Madrid Open. She beat Alexandra Eala, Linda Noskova, and Diana Shnaider in the second, third, and fourth rounds, respectively. In the quarterfinals, she overcame Keys to secure her spot in the semifinals against Gauff.

Meanwhile, Gauff, seeded fourth, triumphed over the likes of Dayana Yastremska, Ann Li, Belinda Bencic, and Mirra Andreeva to advance to the semifinals.

Ahead of the final four match between Gauff and Świątek, while speaking on Tennis Channel, Roddick remarked that Gauff winning her last two matches on the tour against Świątek won’t be “relevant” in the semifinal match in Madrid since the former World No. 1 is a strong clay court player.

“I’m always about clay and surface and matchups. Like winning a match indoors at the end of last year in the World Tour Finals, I’m not sure how relevant it is past just the general mentality of Coco Gauff, but I don’t know if that translates over to this matchup,” Roddick said.

Roddick also stated that Gauff has to put her strong backhand to use to secure a victory over Świątek.

“If I’m Coco Gauff, I’m putting more stock in the fact that Iga has actually been losing sets. The non-negotiable in this is Coco Gauff has to hit her backhand through the court. That’s the shot that she can create space with, that’s the shot that she can do damage with. When she gets the chance, even if it’s in the middle, even if it’s a crossed line, wherever it goes, she has to hit it with emphasis,” he added.

Exploring Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek’s Head-to-Head Record

Gauff and Świątek have competed against each other a total of 14 times on the WTA Tour, with the Pole emerging victorious in 11 of those matches.

They have faced each other three times at the Grand Slam level, all at the French Open. Their first encounter at a Grand Slam event was in the final of the 2022 French Open, which Swiatek won convincingly with a score of 6-1, 6-3, securing her second title at Roland Garros and her second Major title overall.

Their next two meetings at the French Open were in the quarterfinals of the 2023 tournament, which Świątek won 6-4, 6-2, and in the semifinals of the 2024 event, where the former World No. 1 emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Gauff’s only victories against Świątek came in the semifinals of the 2023 Cincinnati Open during the round-robin stage of the 2024 WTA Finals, and most recently in the women’s singles match in the final of the 2025 United Cup.
