Tennis fans got more than what they expected when Taylor Townsend pulled off a stunning upset over Jelena Ostapenko at the 2025 US Open. The heated exchange between the two players after their second-round match has become the talk of the tennis world, with former world No. 1 Andy Roddick delivering some sharp criticism of Ostapenko’s behavior.
What Did Andy Roddick Say About Jelena Ostapenko’s Behaviour Against Taylor Townsend?
On his “Quick Served” podcast, Roddick didn’t hold back when discussing the controversy. The former US Open champion took particular issue with Ostapenko’s decision to lecture someone about sportsmanship, calling it the “heights of hypocrisy.”
“Ostapenko lecturing someone about class on a tennis court is like me lecturing someone about trying everything they can to stop losing their hair,” Roddick said during the podcast. He pointed out what he saw as clear double standards, noting that “I think there are lots of players on tour that aren’t a fan of hers.”
Roddick made his strongest point about Ostapenko’s own court behavior, suggesting she should work on herself first. “If you have that opinion set where you want to lecture someone about sportsmanship, I have a suggestion, start looking people in the eye when you shake their hands,” he said. The former world No. 1 added that only after fixing her own handshake etiquette should she “criticize someone for not saying sorry for a let cord.”
While Roddick admitted he finds Ostapenko entertaining and “thinks she is petty” most of the time, he drew the line at her lecturing others about respectful behavior. The tennis analyst acknowledged his own past on-court outbursts but emphasized the importance of not being a “complete hypocrite” about such matters.
The Heated Exchange Between Ostapenko and Townsend After the Second-Round Match
The drama began after Townsend’s impressive 7-5, 6-1 victory over the 25th-seeded Ostapenko. What should have been a routine post-match handshake quickly turned into a public confrontation when Ostapenko accused her opponent of lacking class and education.

According to Townsend, Ostapenko told her, “I have no class, no education,” and warned her to “see what happens when we get outside of the US.” The American responded confidently, saying, “I’m excited. Bring it.”
The tension stemmed from two main issues Ostapenko raised. First, she claimed Townsend failed to apologize for a net cord shot during a crucial moment in the match. Second, she criticized Townsend for starting her warm-up at the net instead of the baseline, calling it “very disrespectful and against the rules.”
Following the match, Ostapenko took to Instagram to defend her position, writing: “There are some rules in tennis which most of the players follow and it was first time ever that this happened to me on tour.”
Townsend defended herself by pointing out that her unique warm-up routine has been part of her preparation since junior tennis. She also pushed back against Ostapenko’s expectations, saying, “The problem is, don’t push your expectations on me.” The American responded to Ostapenko’s Instagram stories by calling it comical, to explain what you said.
The controversy has drawn reactions from across the tennis world, with many supporting Townsend’s handling of the situation. She now leads their head-to-head record 2-1 and has advanced to face fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva in the third round.
