In a series of Instagram Stories, Ostapenko laid out her side without naming Townsend. She revealed that she called the American out after the match for not apologizing when the ball hit the net in a decisive moment. According to the Latvian, Townsend replied that she “doesn’t have to say sorry at all.”

Ostapenko opined that Townsend being on home soil doesn’t mean “she can behave and do whatever she wants.” According to her beliefs, all players must begin their pre-match warm-ups on the baseline.

Ostapenko claimed her opponent “came out and straight away started the warm-up at the net,” an incident she deemed “very disrespectful” and against tennis etiquette. The Latvian player then expressed gratitude for the support from her fans and promised to come back stronger next year.

Later, the 2017 French Open champion addressed the backlash from fans calling her a “racist.” She insisted she has “NEVER” been racist and respects “all nations of people in the world.”

In the second round of the 2025 US Open, Townsend defeated her opponent in a contentious match lasting 1 hour and 18 minutes. The American won in straight sets with a final score of 7-5, 6-1.
