Alexander Zverev is competing at the 2026 Madrid Open without his girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla, by his side. With more than 6,300 miles separating them, Thomalla was forced to devise a creative way to end her day still feeling close to the German star, ensuring he was with her in spirit.
Sophia Thomalla Jokes About ‘Sharing One Bed’ With Alexander Zverev
No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev arrived in Madrid looking to win his third title at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Following a first-round bye, he ran into some trouble in his opening match against Mariano Navone, but managed to secure a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory after a hard-fought contest.
Sophia Thomalla was unable to make an appearance in the world No. 3’s box, as she is currently in Koh Samui, Thailand, attending to her duties as the host of the German reality TV series “Are You The One?” Nevertheless, she made time to tune into Zverev’s post-match interview from bed, quipping that they were together despite the distance.
“At least we are sharing one bed,” Thomalla wrote on her Instagram story with a laughing emoji.

While Thomalla has long been a familiar presence in Zverev’s player’s box, another important figure has recently joined his support team as his daughter Mayla has begun accompanying him at tournaments. After spending time together at the Mexican Open, the 29-year-old also brought her along to the BMW Open, where he delightedly introduced her to Bayern Munich players during a visit to one of their games.

What Did Alexander Zverev Say After Surviving Madrid Open Scare
Zverev didn’t mince words regarding his performance in his second-round clash at the Madrid Open, admitting that he lost focus after a dominant first set. However, the German chose to take the positives from his strong comeback in the decider as he looked ahead to the remainder of his campaign.
“First set was almost perfect, and then I lost focus completely. Then the second set, it was terrible, but that’s what happens sometimes in the first match of a tournament,” he said. “Definitely, I could have focused a bit better, but the level was there. The first set and third set was great tennis, and I just have to focus on that.”
The world No. 3 will aim to deliver a stronger performance against Térence Atmane in the third round of the Masters 1000 event. If he emerges victorious against the Frenchman, Zverev will take on Jakub MenÅ¡Ãk or Karen Khachanov in the fourth round, with Daniil Medvedev or Flavio Cobolli potentially looming in the quarterfinals.
