João Fonseca Withdrawing From Next Gen ATP Finals Draws Varied Reactions From Tennis Fans

This season, Fonseca’s last tournament on the ATP Tour was the 2025 Paris Masters, where he reached the second round before losing to Karen Khachanov. He then qualified for the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals, but withdrew citing an injury sustained at the end of the ATP Tour season. The 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals is scheduled to be held from December 17, 2025, to December 21, 2025, at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Brazilian’s withdrawal from  Jeddah drew various reactions from tennis fans, who took to social media to share their thoughts. One fan questioned why Fonseca withdrew from the Next Gen ATP Finals but not from the Miami Invitational if he was injured.

“Has he withdrawn from the exhibition in Miami or is that paycheck worth playing through the injury? 🤔,” a fan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Meanwhile, another praised Fonseca’s decision to withdraw from Jeddah, stating that it would give other emerging players an opportunity to showcase their talents.

“As others have said, he won this last year! Give other next gen players a chance this time!” a fan wrote.

“Or maybe its not worth it to play when he’s top 25 in the world already. Almost disrespectful to other up and coming guys to give spots to players like Fonseca and Tien,” a fan posted.

“He should have said that. Saying he’s injured when he’s playing an exho n 10 days is embarrassing,” a fan wrote.

In 2024, Fonseca defeated Arthur Fils, Learner Tien, and Jakub Menšík in the group stage of the Next Gen ATP Finals. He advanced to the final by eliminating Luca Van Assche in the semifinals and ultimately triumphed over Tien with a scoreline of 2-4, 4-3(8), 4-0, 4-2 to win the title.

This year, Fonseca captured five titles, including four in singles and a team title at the 2025 Laver Cup with Team World. He claimed two Challenger titles: the 2025 Canberra Tennis International and the Arizona Tennis Classic, defeating Ethan Quinn and Alexander Bublik, respectively.
