Steelers Named As Potential Landing Spot for Ex-Bills Playmaker To Bolster Aaron Rodgers-Led Offense

With the Steelers' wide receiver corps thins behind DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh is named one of the top landing spots for a 26-year-old WR with 29 touchdowns.

The Pittsburgh Steelers went all-in this season for a Super Bowl push. From acquiring DK Metcalf, Darius Slay, and Jalen Ramsey to signing Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers have been one of the busiest teams during the 2024-25 offseason.

However, after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh is thin in the wide receiver room and has been named one of the top landing spots for a former Buffalo Bills wide receiver.

How Would A New WR Fit With the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Gabe Davis earned the nickname “Big Game Gabe” through his postseason performances, particularly during Buffalo’s 2021 playoff run. He served as Josh Allen’s second option that season behind Stefon Diggs, consistently delivering in the biggest moments.

His most memorable performance came against the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round. Davis posted eight receptions, 201 yards, and four touchdowns that night, though the Bills ultimately lost in overtime. That four-touchdown performance tied an NFL playoff record and showcased his ability to rise to the occasion when the stakes are highest.

That production took a sharp downturn during his time in Jacksonville. Davis tallied just two touchdowns in 2024-25 with the Jaguars after suffering a season-ending knee injury in November. The injury may have contributed to his career-low numbers, but both Pittsburgh and USA TODAY’s Nick Brinkerhoff hope Davis can still shine in big games like he did with Buffalo.

“Davis was one-and-done in Jacksonville, failing to take the next step following his departure from Buffalo,” Brinkerhoff wrote. “With just 20 catches, 239 yards, and two touchdowns in 10 games, Davis is long way away from the four-touchdown game in the 2022 playoffs.

Perhaps that player is still in there, and someone is bound to find out what the 26-year-old can do.”

“He is a complementary piece at this point, but perhaps a change of scenery is what the doctor ordered.”

Why Do the Steelers Need Another Receiver?

Davis, who visited the Steelers’ facility last month, fits well in Pittsburgh. Catching passes from Rodgers could be precisely the spark he needs to rediscover the effective production he once showcased in Buffalo.

Beyond Metcalf, the Steelers lack a reliable pass catcher for Rodgers. No one else is a guaranteed starter, which is where Davis fits into their plans.

Calvin Austin III is entering his third year in the NFL after a strong sophomore season. He caught 36 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns, all improvements from his rookie campaign.

The Steelers also brought in veteran Robert Woods this offseason for added depth. Will Austin and Woods be enough to effectively support Rodgers when Metcalf draws coverage? The Steelers seemingly don’t think so, given they had Davis visit the facility.
