Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah has emerged as a topic of transfer discussion following his recent explosive interview with his club. With a host of non-European clubs allegedly interested, a former player has surprisingly backed Manchester United to sign the Egyptian.
But what did Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand have to say about the Reds star?
Rio Ferdinand Makes Wild Claim About Mohamed Salah’s Situation
With Salah’s future at Liverpool up in the air, Ferdinand has claimed that Manchester United should be opportunistic and sign their arch-rivals’ veteran winger. He also asserted that the Reds star is likely to seek a new club following a rift with head coach Arne Slot.
“There’s no way Mo Salah goes to Manchester United. I don’t think he’s got that trait in him that Wazza (Wayne Rooney) or (Carlos) Tevez had where he goes the extra mile. But yeah, I would make an offer, a public one as well! It would be unbelievable, wouldn’t it? It would be a joke,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents’ (via Metro).
Ferdinand, who represented Manchester United between 2002 and 2014, added, “There’s no doubt in my mind that the Liverpool players don’t want Mohamed Salah to leave because he helps them win trophies. But I think he’s gone, it’s gone too far. Salah clearly thinks the manager has an ulterior motive and wants him out of the club.”
Due to the animosity between Liverpool and Manchester United on the pitch, no player has transferred directly between the two clubs in over 61 years. Phil Chisnall was the last player to do so in 1964 when he left his boyhood club, Manchester United, to join Liverpool.

Which Clubs Are Keen To Sign Mohamed Salah in January?
With the January transfer window just weeks away, Salah has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs of late. He is being monitored by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit San Diego FC, according to famed journalist Ben Jacobs.
On the other hand, the four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner has also emerged on three different teams’ respective radars. The 33-year-old, whose Liverpool contract is set to expire in June 2027, has been identified as a target for Saudi pair NEOM FC and Al-Qadsiah, as well as MLS side Chicago Fire, according to talkSPORT.
Meanwhile, Salah is expected to continue to be out of the Reds’ squad as the team prepare to host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, Dec. 13.
