Manchester United got off to an excellent start under caretaker manager Michael Carrick on Saturday, Jan. 17, after beating rivals Manchester City 2-0Â at Old Trafford. Yet, the belief is that Carrick will be replaced by a permanent head coach this summer.
With a number of managers currently linked, a former Arsenal and Chelsea star has opined on whether Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique would join the Red Devils.
Manchester United Told Luis Enrique Would Snub Club
During a chat with Hochgepokert, former Premier League winner Emmanuel Petit suggested that a manager of Enrique’s calibre would surely reject Manchester United this summer.
“I know that Luis Enrique hasn’t signed an extension at PSG, but I’m pretty sure that he is an intelligent guy. He knows perfectly that he cannot achieve anything bigger than what he did last campaign with PSG. Should he go to Manchester United? The circus of Manchester United? Do you think a guy like him would work there?,” Petit said.
“Since the Qatari owners arrived at PSG, they had never given the power to their manager. Then, they gave the power to Luis Enrique and they won the UEFA Champions League. He has the power to say, ‘No, I want to keep him. Sell this player. Bring this player.’ So, if he goes to Manchester United, do you think that will work with all these clowns behind him?,” the 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning midfielder continued.
Petit, who also won the 2000 UEFA European Championship trophy, claimed the Red Devils’ top brass are too controlling to allow the current PSG boss to implement his vision.
“Those guys are saying to the manager, ‘You should do this. You should play this player. No, no, we are planning to bring another player.’ Can you imagine the likes of Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Jurgen Klopp, Carlo Ancelotti, or Jose Mourinho coming to Manchester United in their current state? Not a chance. It’s like they want a puppet,” Petit added.

“If I was Luis Enrique and Manchester United wanted me, I would have one condition, to be the manager, not the head coach, he needs to demand control. Would they agree? I’m not sure about that. We have seen how disastrous this club is,” Petit concluded.
Enrique, 55, has won two UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga titles, and one Ligue 1 title. The former Barcelona and AS Roma manager’s PSG contract is set to run out in June 2027.
Apart from Enrique, managers like Gareth Southgate, Thomas Tuchel, Xavi Hernandez, and Oliver Glasner are also reportedly linked with the Old Trafford outfit.
