There have been goals galore at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but President Donald Trump’s outsize presence has also made a few headlines at this edition of the tournament.
President Trump has already made it a point to keep an eye on the proceedings, what with the World Cup being played on home soil. He did, however, ruffle some feathers when a report emerged stating he’d pull off a repeat of the 2025 Club World Cup.

The report in question was released by Ben Jacobs, who noted, “FIFA have no objection to Trump breaking presentation protocol and handing the World Cup trophy directly to the winning captain, and remaining in the thick of the celebrations.”
President Trump did exactly that this time last year when he handed the Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James. Trump grabbed headlines as he stood in the thick of celebrations, even as some of Chelsea’s players sported a puzzled look on their faces.
On Tuesday, June 23, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino doubled down on that report during an appearance on Fox News.

“We will be together with the president, enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner. Of course, we are together all the time.”

President Trump already gave a shout-out to France during a meeting with Emmanuel Macron. Les Bleus are currently tagged among the favorites to go all the way to the final, alongside other heavyweights like Argentina, Brazil, Spain, England, and Germany.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final will be played at MetLife Stadium, the very same venue where President Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea a year ago. That game is scheduled to be played on July 19, which means we have a whole lot of action to go through before we see President Trump on stage with the world champions.
