Skip Bayless Claims Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown’s ‘Serious Issue off the Field’ Led to WR’s Trade Drama

Skip Bayless claims Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown had a serious off-field issue that fueled the wide receiver's trade rumors.

The Philadelphia Eagles have an A.J. Brown problem, and if you believe Skip Bayless, the fracture started far away from the gridiron. Trade rumors have swirled around the superstar receiver since Philadelphia’s sluggish offensive showing in a 23-19 wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Most executives point to the team’s massive $43.5 million pre-June 1 dead cap hurdle as the primary roadblock keeping Brown in an Eagles uniform right now. But the genesis of this potential blockbuster move might be much more personal than financial.

What Caused the Rift Between A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts

According to Bayless, the underlying friction isn’t just about scheme. It’s about a deeply personal rift between Brown and quarterback Jalen Hurts. While general manager Howie Roseman continues to publicly insist that Brown remains a foundational piece of the franchise, back-channel chatter paints a wildly different picture of the locker room.

“I don’t think they’re going to trade A.J. now,” Bayless said during a recent segment. “This is at the crux of the problem of that locker room. Jalen and A.J. had a serious issue off the field. I tried to defend Jalen on this and I can’t because it was reiterated to me last night. Jalen started it.”

Bayless refused to elaborate on the exact nature of the conflict but emphasized the emotional damage.

“I don’t want to go into the gory details but it was Jalen who started the issue, the beef,” Bayless continued. “They tried to make amends, Jalen apologized, they tried to get back on the same professional page but you know and I know, when something like that happens off the field it never goes completely away.”

It adds vital context to Brown’s visible frustrations throughout the 2025 campaign. Despite posting 78 receptions for 1,003 yards and 7 touchdowns in 15 games, the three-time Pro Bowler routinely looked agitated on the sidelines. When a team’s two most critical stars aren’t seeing eye-to-eye off the turf, the disconnect inevitably shows up on Sundays.

How Jalen Hurts’ Trust Issues Impact the Eagles’ Passing Game

The alleged personal conflict appears to be bleeding into the passing game. Brown is arguably the NFL’s premier physical wideout, explicitly paid to win contested catches. Yet, Bayless pointed out a distinct lack of trust from Hurts when facing specific defensive looks.

“The other big criticism of Jalen is against zone, he won’t throw into any tight windows, especially with A.J.,” Bayless said. “He won’t ‘force feed’ the ball to A.J. and give him a chance to make a play between two.”

This on-field hesitation became glaring as the season dragged on. The Eagles offense lacked its usual explosive rhythm, failing to maximize Brown’s catch radius. If Hurts isn’t willing to throw a 50/50 ball to his top playmaker in traffic, it neutralizes one of Philadelphia’s biggest schematic advantages.

According to PFSN’s Offensive Impact metric, the Eagles were in the middle of the field, ranked 16th in the league with a grade of C.

The front office now faces a critical dilemma. Dealing Brown before June 1 triggers a historic salary cap penalty. Waiting until the summer opens the door for receiver-needy suitors like the New England Patriots, led by Brown’s former Titans coach Mike Vrabel.

Roseman must determine if this fractured dynamic is truly beyond repair. If the franchise quarterback and star receiver can no longer coexist, Philadelphia will have to make a choice that alters the NFC landscape.
