Shedeur Sanders Gets Major Boost in First NFL Start As Browns Address Glaring Need

Shedeur Sanders enters his first NFL start for the Cleveland Browns with timely help arriving ahead of its matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders will need all the help he can get to ensure that his first NFL start is a successful one against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Nonetheless, right before his first start, Sanders received good news as the young signal-caller will have the protection in the pocket needed to make timely passes to all his weapons.

Browns’ Shedeur Sanders Will Have Both Starting Tackles

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that Sanders will have both starting tackles available for his first start on Sunday against the Raiders.

Jack Conklin, who hurt his knee late in the Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, was listed as questionable but is active. He spent the week practicing on a limited basis before getting cleared to suit up.

Meanwhile, left tackle Cam Robinson dealt with a knee issue of his own in that defeat to the Ravens, though he was a full participant by Friday and carried no injury designation.

PFSN’s Offensive Line Impact metric paints a rough picture for the Browns. Their line sits at the bottom of the NFL with a 54.9 grade, and since PFSN began charting OLi in 2019, only two teams have posted worse results.

Cleveland has surrendered pressure on 41.6 percent of dropbacks, the second-worst rate in the league, and their 168 pressures allowed also rank second.

Moreover, the average time before that pressure arrives is 3.27 seconds, which is the fourth-worst mark. They have also given up a league-high 53 quick pressures within 2.75 seconds.

The run game has not fared any better, with the group creating only .43 yards before contact, the lowest figure in the NFL, and producing just 3.8 yards per carry, which stands near the bottom at fourth-worst.

Shedeur Sanders Faces Pressure Against the Raiders

Sanders struggled in the loss to Baltimore after coming in for Dillon Gabriel, who left the game with a concussion. He connected on just 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards, along with an interception.

After that performance, FOX Sports analyst Nick Wright says the Browns rookie is under serious pressure to respond with a strong showing against a Raiders defense who are ranked 26th in PFSN’s Defense Impact (DEFi) and have surrendered 30 or more points in four of its past six games.

“This game right here is, by a wide margin, the single biggest moment of Shedeur’s football life,” Wright said in a video published on November 20 from the “What’s Wright? with Nick Wright” show. “I’m not predicting that he’ll be terrible. I think this is actually a pretty good spot for him. I am predicting, though, if he’s terrible — and he was terrible last week — that more likely than not, this is the only start he ever gets for any team.

“We know definitively no team loved him coming out of school. Nobody. There is not a player a team loves that is available in the fifth round. This is Shedeur’s moment. The league is going to keep moving. As Marlo Stanfield would say, ‘Do it or don’t, but I got places to be.'”
