The Los Angeles Rams made headlines for all the wrong reasons during the first round of the NFL Draft: with the 13th overall pick, they selected quarterback Ty Simpson instead of a “win-now” player.
There has been a lot of talk about the move, but one of the biggest issues is what is being seen as apparent displeasure from head coach Sean McVay with the pick. With that displeasure, one NFL analyst thinks that the move will lead to McVay leaving the Rams.
Consequences of the Rams Drafting Ty Simpson on Sean McVay
Last season, the Rams had the best offense in the NFL according to PFSN’s NFL Offensive Impact Metric. With an impact score of 92.3 and a letter grade of A-, the production was facilitated by the current quarterback, Matthew Stafford.
In PFSN’s NFL Quarterback Impact Metric, he ranked as the sixth-best quarterback with an impact score of 84.4 and a letter grade of B. In 17 games, he completed 65.0% of passes for 4,707 passing yards (led league), 46 touchdowns (led league), and eight interceptions, and because of that, he was named the NFL MVP.
With Stafford’s age and injury concerns, the team decided to draft his successor, Simpson, to McVay’s apparent surprise.
Now, NFL Analyst Jared Smith is saying it could lead to McVay’s departure:
“I think when Stafford retires, Sean McVay is GONE.”

In fact, a few weeks ago at the NFL League Meetings, McVay said the following about Simpson and the 13th overall pick:
“There are a lot of other guys that I like at that 13th pick… Whether it’s quarterbacks, whether it’s guys on offense or defense… We’re excited, we’re gonna get a good player at 13, I know that.”
Simpson would’ve been a fine pick if they hadn’t reached for him with the 13th overall pick. Now, will it lead to McVay’s departure in a few years, or will he be willing to take on the rookie as his next franchise quarterback?
In his senior season, Simpson completed 64.5% of passes for 3567 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He added another 93 rushing yards and two touchdowns as well. In PFSN’s College Football Quarterback Impact Metric, he ranked as the 25th-best quarterback with an impact score of 85.4 and a letter grade of B.
As the offseason progresses and training camps start, it’ll be notable to see if McVay embraces the Simpson selection.
