Sean McVay Defends Puka Nacua’s Character To Prevent a Rush to Judgment on Rams Star

Sean McVay defends Puka Nacua amid character scrutiny, insisting he trusts the Rams star's heart and refuses to rush to judgment.

After watching the 2025 NFL season, it’s impossible to say that Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua lacks the talent to be an All-Pro player.

However, there have been questions about Nacua’s character during and after the season, following some incidents involving the young player’s behavior. Regardless of the issues, head coach Sean McVay says he’ll continue to guide Nacua.

Why Rams Coach Sean McVay Continues to Support Puka Nacua

During the 2025 season, Nacua put the league on notice after taking a considerable jump as a wide receiver. In McVay’s offense, which ranked first in the league in PFSN’s NFL Offensive Impact Metric with an impact score of 92.3 and a grade of A-, Nacua was the star.

In 16 games for the 2025 season, Nacua led the league with 129 receptions for 1,715 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Additionally, he led the league in yards per game (107.2) and first downs (80).

In PFSN’s NFL Wide Receiver Impact Metric, he ranked as the best wide receiver in the league with an impact score of 98.2 and a letter grade of A+. Aside from being named as an All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl, this performance ranks as the third-best performance in PFSN’s WRi since the 2019 season.

The talent is undeniable, but some character questions dampen Nacua’s status. Regardless of the character issues, McVay says he’ll continue to guide the young receiver. During NFL league meetings, he said the following:

Take a Quick Break. Run a Mock Draft!

“You guys know, I trust this kid’s heart… Love him, put your arm around him, want to continue to help him grow. And, really, get all the appropriate facts before I rush to judgment on that particular situation. But I will say, knowing this guy for three years, is I do trust his heart. I trust the human being. And I want to be able to put my arm around him.”

Speaking more on the support staff around Nacua, McVay added the following:

BE AN NFL GM: PFSN’s Ultimate GM Simulator

“You’ve got a lot of people who love him and want to be able to help him continue to grow… I think about a lot of instances, even in this role, you’re growing up in the midst of it, becoming a man. And that’s exactly what we’re witnessing with him. And I want to help him become the best human being he can possibly be, because I do believe better people make better Rams. And I trust this kid’s heart, like I said.”

Nacua has thoroughly exceeded all expectations set upon him after the Rams drafted him with the 177th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Entering the last year of his rookie contract, Nacua is likely set to be the highest-paid wide receiver once he receives his extension. But as a face of the franchise, he’ll need to smarten up.
