Why Are the Seahawks Wearing Different Uniforms? Everything to Know About Their Throwbacks

After cementing themselves as a legitimate playoff threat, the Seattle Seahawks are bringing back throwback jerseys for Week 5.

When the Seattle Seahawks chose to move on from Geno Smith and instead gave Sam Darnold the starting job, a lot of people questioned the move. With Smith serving as the far more accomplished and trusted name, it seemed like a choice that might set the team back, at least in the short term. However, through the first four weeks of the year, the decision has been a smash-hit success.

Going 3-1, the Seahawks have looked impressive on both sides of the football, leading to a balanced approach to the games. As they enter Week 5 with a chance to separate themselves from the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West, Seattle is opting for a different look in its game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But why is the team wearing a unique throwback jersey on Sunday?

The Seattle Seahawks Throwback Jerseys

The jersey is a throwback to a bygone era for the city of Seattle and its football. With the ’90s coinciding with a musical revolution, a technological leap, and an increased bond with caffeine, the city was at the forefront of all three changes.

These jerseys are meant to represent that transformation, alongside the changes to the Seahawks since that time. Going for their classic look, the team has updated its silhouette while still maintaining the royal blue and apple green tint.

An ode to the Salish seas and forests of the Emerald City and Pacific Northwest, they also feature the original, simple design of the giant white numbers on the front and back of the jersey.

Going a step further, the team’s old logo has been added to both sleeves atop thick blue and green stripes, with a thin green and white collar added to the jersey’s neck as well. Another tribute comes in the commemorative patch inside the neckline, a nod to the franchise’s original stadium — the Kingdome.

The pants share a similar color palette, with matte gray fabric featuring a bold blue stripe on the sides and green stripes on either side. Add in solid blue socks, and the look completes itself on the 50th anniversary of the franchise.

The helmet is a redesign of the classics that the team wore throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. However, with protective measures taking significant steps forward in recent years, it was updated to meet the modern standards that apply to every team.

A team that ranks seventh on both PFSN’s Offense and Defense Impact has firmly cemented itself as one to watch for the rest of the year. Now, with a reimagined look of a classic, it is leaning on nostalgia to energize its fan base like never before.
