Despite hiring Kellen Moore this offseason, the New Orleans Saints are among the worst teams in football for the second straight season. The Saints’ 2-8 record in 2025 is a result of an aging roster and poor roster construction by general manager Mickey Loomis. This has led some to question if Loomis’s job is safe heading into this upcoming offseason.
However, according to a recent report, it doesn’t seem like owner Gayle Benson has any plans of moving off of Loomis.
Saints GM Mickey Loomis at No Risk of Losing His Job
Benson made it clear that Loomis won’t be going anywhere when she talked to Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com.
According to Duncan, Benson said,” It may not be what the fans want to hear, but as far as firing Mickey Loomis, that’s ridiculous. [He] does a great job. . . . When I am asked to hold Mickey Loomis accountable, I do. Not every decision works out, they never do. . . . I hold him in high esteem, and I am very pleased with what he has accomplished, acquired and is building.”
That’s a pretty strong endorsement for a GM who hasn’t fielded a playoff team since the 2020 season, Drew Brees’ last before he retired, and before Sean Payton stepped away in 2021. Normally, missing the postseason during a transition from a future Hall of Famer wouldn’t be a major indictment. On the other hand, the Saints were still built to win with a veteran-heavy roster after Brees’s retirement, which is why they signed Derek Carr in 2023.
That move never paid off. New Orleans went just 14-13 in Carr’s two seasons as the starter, and he missed seven games in his second year due to injury. It is never a good sign when a franchise tries to stay in “win-now” mode without the high-end roster needed to support that approach.
Although the Saints have shown fight this season, they are by no means a good team. According to PFSN’s offensive impact metric, New Orleans has an impact score of 64.6, which is 29th in the NFL. Defensively, the Saints fare a little better with a score of 70.8, which is 21st in the NFL.

The Saints’ poor play on the field isn’t the only reason why fans want Loomis gone. New Orleans has been in cap hell since Brees’s final few seasons. Many believe a new general manager could help the Saints work out their cap issues.
Nonetheless, Benson’s comments make it clear that Loomis isn’t going anywhere. And if the Saints continue down this path, that decision could create even more problems for the franchise moving forward.
