Russell Wilson’s Ex-Teammate, NFL World React to 10-Time Pro Bowl QB Reigniting Beef With Sean Payton: ‘Talk Your Talk’

What did the NFL community have to say about how QB Russell Wilson responded to Broncos HC Sean Payton's comments? Find out here.

Any NFL offseason is spiced up when there’s a beef simmering, and the tension between Russell Wilson and Sean Payton drew a lot of attention lately. After Wilson’s New York Giants narrowly lost to Payton’s Denver Broncos this past season, the head coach said Wilson’s decline in performance was due to a lack of focus and adequate preparation.

However, he didn’t keep quiet about it, and the NFL community loved his response.

Russell Wilson Earns Fanfare for Slamming Sean Payton’s ‘Disrespectful’ Comments

Wilson appeared on “Bussin’ With The Boys,” where he was asked about his tweet responding to Payton’s comments after their Week 7 clash. Wilson’s tweet read: “Classless… But not surprised… Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media.”

The quarterback stood by his post, saying he won’t tolerate the disrespect Payton showed.

His stance earned the plaudits of many prominent figures in the NFL, including his former teammate, Quandre Diggs. Wilson and Diggs played together on the Seattle Seahawks for three years before the shot-caller moved to Denver.

“Talk your talk 3!” Diggs tweeted out in support.

“Wish Russ would have had this edge when playing for Payton,” The Denver Post’s Troy Renck wrote. “I do appreciate his explanation.”

Wilson and Payton spent an unsuccessful 2023 season together, as the Broncos went 8-9 and ranked 23rd on PFSN’s Offensive Impact Metric for that season. Their lack of success, combined with the sour taste of Wilson’s time at Mile High, led to tensions that seem to still be ongoing.

“Would be so refreshing if Russell Wilson could show authenticity like this more — including vulnerability,” The Athletic’s Mike Sando raised a different point. “Would help his legacy… Speaking of vulnerability, does anyone think Sean Payton woke up one day & decided to give up play calling? I need convincing.”

“The elite callers — Holmgren, Walsh, Reid, the Shanahans, McVay, Norv Turner — simply do not do that on their own. Has someone on their level done it voluntarily? Situation in Denver very very interesting to me,” Sando further wrote.

The 10-time Pro Bowler spent a highly successful decade in Seattle, making Super Bowl appearances, winning one. In many people’s eyes, he’s a future Hall of Famer and deserves more respect than he’s getting.

“Former #Broncos QB Russell Wilson stands behind ‘classless’ tweet to Sean Payton: ‘I got the same amount of rings as you got. To take a shot, I don’t like. I don’t think it’s necessary. … It’s not a matter of disrespect. Just don’t disrespect me,'” Mile High Huddle senior editor Zack Kelberman tweeted.

“Loved how transparent @DangeRussWilson was this entire Pod,” ‘Bussin’ With The Boys’ host Taylor Lewan posted.

Whether we see another Wilson-Payton head-to-head showdown remains to be seen. Wilson lost the Giants’ starting job to Jaxson Dart, and he’s likely on the tail end of his career. Additionally, whether the Giants re-sign him ahead of next season is also still up in the air.
