One of the hottest topics during the final stretch of the last NFL regular season was a heated exchange of criticism between Russell Wilson and Sean Payton. Russell Wilson Speaks Again About Controversy With Sean Payton

At the time, Wilson defended his professionalism, stating that he always gave his best effort and that his difficulties with the Denver Broncos stemmed from a system that did not leverage his strengths, rather than a lack of commitment.

Months later, the QB decided to revisit the subject in light of criticism from the Broncos HC.

During an appearance on the podcast “Bussin’ With The Boys,” Wilson said that the public criticism was unnecessary, especially considering that he is a former player for the franchise. In addition, the New York Giants QB said it was time to respond to the criticism, stating that he would not have said anything back if Sean had not been “disrespectful.”

“I got a lot of respect for him as a play caller this and that but to take a shot. I don’t think it’s necessary, you know, I mean, especially when I’m not even on your own team anymore. So for me, there’s a point in time where you have to I’ve realized I’ve stayed quiet for so long There’s a there’s a time and place where I’m not right?”, said Wilson.

“And so I think that you know for me, I know who I am as a competitor as a warrior as a champion to and. You know, I’ve beaten Sean to you know, like we’ve been on the same place and same thing. And so it’s not a matter of disrespect.

“Just don’t disrespect me. That’s my big thought. So going back to what I could have done better along the way, man. I think that you know one you always want to win more games.”

The relationship between Wilson (who ranks No. 42 in the PFSN QB Impact metric with a D- grade) and Payton imploded at the end of the 2023 season when the QB was benched.

The Broncos claimed at the time that this decision was made due to performance issues, but the media pointed out a $37 million injury guarantee clause in his contract as the real reason.

If Wilson were injured, the Broncos would be required to pay that amount in 2025. Payton wanted Wilson to waive that guarantee, which he refused. In openly criticizing the veteran’s behavior, the HC tried to justify it by stating that the franchise needed a fresh start with a younger QB.
