The Seattle Seahawks have made a habit of hunting for every possible advantage under Mike Macdonald. Richard Sherman believes their controversial addition of Terrion Arnold fits that philosophy almost perfectly.
Seattle agreed to terms with the former Detroit Lions cornerback this week despite Arnold facing eight felony charges connected to an alleged robbery and kidnapping case in Florida. Sherman sees an obvious risk, but he also understands the football logic behind the move.

“I think the Seahawks are signing him because, as always, they’re chasing edges,” Sherman said during a segment on his podcast.
That phrase is especially familiar in Seattle. Macdonald has used “chasing edges” to describe the organization’s constant search for competitive advantages, and Sherman believes Arnold represents another swing at finding one.
The Lions selected Arnold No. 24 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He started 22 games across two seasons before Detroit released him in June. Sherman pointed to that pedigree and believes Seattle may have a better defensive fit for the former Alabama standout.
“If you see a former first-round pick who’s played some good football, you know he’s had some up-and-down moments, but he’s played some good football for the Detroit Lions in a tough scheme,” Sherman added. “I think this is going to be a good signing. I think he’s a player that could fit in this scheme really well, that could thrive in this scheme.”

Sherman believes Arnold showed good football in Detroit despite some uneven moments and suggested the Lions sometimes asked him to play outside his strengths.

There is certainly room for improvement. Arnold recorded 91 tackles, 18 passes defended, and one interception in 24 games with Detroit. His 2025 season produced a 70.7 PFN CB Impact score, ranking 90th among qualifying cornerbacks.
Those numbers will not cause anyone to start planning a parade, but Seattle is betting on upside rather than a finished product. Arnold is only 23 and was considered one of the top cornerbacks in his draft class.
Arnold Signing Brings Serious Questions
The football case is only half of Seattle’s gamble.
Arnold was arrested on June 24 and faces eight felony charges related to an alleged February incident in Tampa, Fla. The Lions released him five days later. The NFL could also place Arnold on the commissioner’s exempt list while the legal case continues.

Sherman acknowledged the uncertainty, saying Arnold has significant matters to navigate during the season and adding, “He faces some very serious charges.”
Macdonald said Friday that Seattle conducted extensive background work before agreeing to the signing. He described the feedback from people familiar with Arnold as “overwhelmingly positive” in his team explanation and said the Seahawks will respect both the legal process and any decision the NFL makes about his availability.
Seattle also evaluated Arnold closely before the 2024 NFL Draft, giving the organization more history with him than a typical August addition.
That does not erase the controversy. It does explain why a defending Super Bowl champion with an established locker room might be willing to make the bet.
Sherman’s assessment is simple: Seattle sees talent, sees a possible scheme fit, and is willing to chase another edge. Whether that edge ever makes it onto the field is a much bigger question.
