The NFL Players Association puts out report cards for each team on a variety of factors. From the state of the facility and stadium to the owners and even the minutest details, players provide a detailed report on the franchise.
For some organizations, like the New York Jets, it has reflected extremely poorly. Others, like the San Francisco 49ers, used the feedback to improve their standing in those regards. The latter, as a result, has made a fan out of Richard Sherman.
Why Former NFL Cornerback Richard Sherman Still Praises the 49ers
A fifth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Sherman began his career with the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent seven seasons. Becoming a key part of their terrifying defense, he emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
Making All-Pro in just his second year, he became a perennial threat, with five Pro Bowl and three first-team All-Pro selections. As a result, he became a member of the All-Decade Team and was one of the most terrifying defensive backs in the sport.
After his time with Seattle, which included a Super Bowl championship, he spent three years with the 49ers, even making another Super Bowl appearance. Ultimately, he ended his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before transitioning to an analyst role on television.
However, his love for San Francisco hasn’t diminished in recent times. Last year, the team ranked low among training staff, per the NFLPA report. As a result, general manager John Lynch made it a priority to improve the area.
ESPN’s Nick Wagoner revealed the execution on X. He reported that the team “is spending $9 million to improve rehab and recovery facilities, particularly in hydro areas” and “adding three more staff members with a physical therapy concentration.”
This year, right after the Super Bowl, the NFL won a grievance that disallowed the Players Association from making the report card public. But Sherman believes it could do a ton of good if the organization takes the report in the right way, like the 49ers.
Taking to X, he added, “This is why the report cards work for Orgs that aren’t ‘offended’ by the critique. Just look to improve.” The standard that San Francisco is trying to set might be the perfect one for all teams to follow in the future.
One of the most successful teams, both historically and over the last decade, they are a model example that can lead from the front in that regard. And if the results are there to see, then other franchises might be forced to follow in their footsteps.
