Rich Eisen Calls Texans QB C.J. Stroud an ‘Absolute Bargain’ Before Inevitable $50M Payday

Rich Eisen sees a young quarterback about to break the bank with a $50m paycheck when he looks at the Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud.

After a rollercoaster sophomore campaign followed by an average Year 3, the Houston Texans doubled down on C.J. Stroud, exercising his fifth-year option and locking him in through 2027. The organization has put its trust in him even as questions linger from a shaky playoff stretch that briefly cooled the hype around one of the league’s brightest young passers.

But if you ask Rich Eisen, there’s just a massive financial steal waiting to turn into something much bigger.

Why Rich Eisen Sees a Massive Payday for C.J. Stroud

Eisen didn’t hold back on The Rich Eisen Show when breaking down the numbers behind Stroud’s new deal structure.

“CJ Stroud is now locked in to a salary in his fifth-year of 2027 football to the tune of $25 million, which as you know is an absolute bargain. An absolute bargain when you see Malik Willis sign for that neighborhood, having not started many games at all in his career, and CJ Stroud now entering his fourth season with the Houston Texans, having made the playoffs all three years.”

That framing says everything about how the market is shifting, and how far below it Stroud currently sits. Eisen doubled down on the looming contract reality, pointing out just how quickly the Texans will have to pivot from bargain to blockbuster.

He said, “When you have somebody like CJ Stroud in your building and in your community and you look at him and you can basically say, ‘I’m not paying you 55 million. I’ll pay you 50. I’ll pay you like Brock Purdy or what have you.’ It’s still going to be double of what Malik Willis is being paid plus.”

In other words, the Texans are buying time. They know they can’t avoid the inevitable. And that inevitability, according to Eisen, is crystal clear.

“And here I am saying CJ Stroud is going to get paid and he’s going to be the Houston Texans quarterback for a long time to come,” Eisen said.

The Texans’ decision to lock in Stroud alongside Will Anderson Jr. signals a broader organizational bet on chemistry and familiarity. Despite Stroud’s late-season struggles, the franchise clearly sees its core as a long-term contender rather than a work in progress.

Stroud’s projected $25.9 million cap hit in 2027 gives the Texans flexibility in the short term, allowing them to continue building around him, especially in areas like pass protection and receiving depth that faltered late in the year. The Texans’ O-line couldn’t hold on to its bearings, finishing the season ranked 24th on PFSN’s NFL OL Impact Metrics.

Still, the performance trends can’t be ignored. After finishing fifth in PFSN’s NFL QB Impact Rankings as a rookie, Stroud dipped to 33rd in 2024 before rebounding to 19th in 2025. That inconsistency is part of the evaluation, but not enough to shake the front office’s confidence.

Because ultimately, Eisen’s point cuts through all of it: The Texans aren’t just betting on what Stroud has been; they’re paying early for what he’s about to become.
