The online spat between former Canucks forward Evander Kane and Sportsnet senior columnist Mark Spector has escalated from a debate over public health into a deeply personal rivalry.
After Kane shared a social media post targeting former U.S. federal health official Dr. Anthony Fauci and COVID-19 vaccine mandates, Spector publicly criticized the veteran forward.
Kane responded with a direct personal jab, digging up a past confrontation outside the locker room.
Ex-Canuck Evander Kane Responds to Criticism
The friction began when Kane reacted to reports that Dr. Fauci had been held in contempt of Congress after invoking the Fifth Amendment.
“Imagine believing that someone else’s injection was supposed to protect someone who didn’t get one… and then calling other people the idiots,” Kane wrote. “And acting like that was obvious science. And the media didn’t just repeat it, they amplified it, enforced it, and treated anyone who questioned it like they were dangerous.”
Spector soon weighed in with a brief but pointed response. “Imagine, Evander Kane with a selfish take.”
Kane wasted little time responding. “Imagine, Mark Spector with an idiotic take. The drama of it all. I would say more but you might start crying like you did when I gave you a talking to outside the locker room. Don’t tell me you forgot,” Kane said.

Of course, this is hardly the first disagreement between the two.
During the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs, Spector criticized Kane after the Oilers forward publicly revealed that he had been playing through a sports hernia. Spector argued that Kane had a tendency to create unnecessary distractions around the team. “He doesn’t run his course as a player. He runs his course as the bringer of drama.”
Kane later responded during a media session, joking that the thing motivating him most in the playoffs was “just the drama of it all,” a remark widely viewed as a direct shot at Spector.
Their relationship was tense long before that incident. Going back to Kane’s arrival in Edmonton in 2022, Spector was one of the primary journalists directly challenging Kane on his past contract terminations, off-ice lawsuits, and locker room reputation in Winnipeg, Buffalo, and San Jose.
The timing of the latest exchange is particularly noteworthy because Kane remains an unrestricted free agent.
Teams across the league continue to evaluate the winger, whose combination of scoring ability, physicality, and experience makes him an attractive option. However, his history of controversy has also become part of the equation.
Kane’s latest clash with Spector serves as another reminder that his outspoken personality continues to attract as much attention as his play on the ice.
